How to interpret your CPT score

When you receive your score in the mail, it will be broken down into several sections:

• The REM score (out of 20) refers to the number of sentences in which you correctly identified grammatical errors that are typical of native English speakers. A low score (12 or below) indicates that you make too many mistakes.
• The ESL score (out of 20) refers to the number of sentences in which you correctly identified grammatical errors that are typical of ESL speakers. If you score 10 or below, you should consider enrolling in special courses for speakers of English as a Second Language.
• The essay score consists of 3 scores (each out of 20) for content and development, sentences, and words. Your total essay score is out of 60.

If your total score is 47% or less:

• Take English 071, 081, 091, or 099, or Communications 099, depending on your needs and goals.
• Consult an advisor in order to decide on the best course.
• If English is your second language, attend an ESL placement interview test. 
• If you are a native English speaker and your CPT score is 43 or under, please attend a free UUP Orientation and Assessment Session to determine appropriate placement.

If your total score is 48% or more:

• Take English 105 through 170, or Communications 125, 155 or 165
• If your score is between 48 and 67, it is strongly recommended that you take English 105 before registering in any English course numbered above 105.

Possible reasons for a low score

Your skills in English composition may be weak and need work. Remember, the CPT was marked according to college and university standards for good English composition.

You may have written the test in a hurry and not followed the directions carefully or made careless errors, especially in the sentence section.
