Basketball's Friesen and Volleyball's Bruce Abbotsford Heat/UFV Cascades Athletes of the Week, week ending Sunday, October 30th
Kayla Bruce, women’s volleyball team, and Joel Friesen, men’s basketball team are the Abbotsford Heat/UFV Cascades Athletes of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, October 30th, 2011.
Bruce, led the women’s volleyball team to a pair of 3-0 victories over the College of the Rockies Avalanche, to improve UFV’s PACWest regular season record to a perfect 6-0. The Surrey, BC native recorded 16 kills, 9 aces (1.5 aces per set average), 36 total serves and 9 blocks against COTR this past weekend.
“This was a monster weekend for Kayla,” said UFV Head Coach Dennis Bokenfohr. “She may be our most consistent player as she records great statistics every night.”

Friesen, a third year guard, helped the UFV Cascades men’s basketball team earn the silver medal at the 2011 Honda Way Men’s Basketball tournament, at UFV’s Envision Athletic Centre. The Cascades defeated the University of Guelph, 94-76, before falling to Northwest University Eagles, 86-81, in the tournament championship game. Friesen scored 24 points, recorded 6 total rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in averaging 25 minutes per night over the weekend. The Kinesiology major was named to the Honda Way All-Star team, along with teammate Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC.
