Cascades spilt weekend trip to Saskatchewan and Alberta  

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team split their weekend games falling to Saskatchewan Huskies, 75-65, in Saskatoon, on Friday and defeating the Alberta Pandas, 68-67, on Saturday. The Cascades go into the exams break with a 5-3 conference record in Canada West Western Division.


On Friday, the Cascades came out strong and led by four points at the half, 34-30. In the second half the Huskies out scored UFV by 14 points to earn the 10 point victory. Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC led the Cascades with 15 points, 4 assists and 2 steals. Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba added 12 points and Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC 11 points in the loss. Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC pulled down 6 rebounds as UFV recorded 30 for the game.

Saturday, UFV defeated the Alberta Pandas, 68-67, in a very close game UFV was able to send the Pandas to their second straight conference loss with a strong second quarter in which they overcame a seven point deficit to go into the locker room up by two points, 37-35. In the second half, UFV played strong defence and kept the Pandas from scoring the winning basket down the stretch. Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led UFV with 17 points and 5 rebounds. Tessa Klassen added 13 points and Sarah Wierks pulled down 10 total rebounds.
