UFV Cascades defeat University of Calgary Dinos, 88-71, at Envision Athletic Center

Remain undefeated at home sporting a perfect 5-0 record at EAC

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the University of Calgary Dinos, 88-71, to improve their Canada West regular season record to 6-3, and remain undefeated at the Envision Athletic Center with a perfect 5-0 record. The Cascades are now in first place in the West Division of Canada West, one game ahead of both UBC and University of Victoria.

The Cascades came out strong, fresh off their silver medal performance, at the University of Windsor tournament, and quickly established a lead that they would hold onto the entire night. Leading by as many as ten points in the first quarter, UFV would go into the second quarter up by nine points, holding Calgary to 13 first quarter points. The Cascades played very well on defense the entire night holding the Dinos in check and maintaining their lead throughout the second and third quarters. In the fourth, UFV’s experienced team outscored the Dinos, now 6-3, in the East Division of Canada West by nine points to earn the 17 point victory.

“The girls really did a good job executing the game plan tonight. I thought early we did a good job taking away something Calgary does very well and then as the game went on our confidence on offence continued to grow,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer. “Our guard play was strong tonight obviously Aieisha (Luyken) and Tessa (Klassen)had big game, but we also had really good minutes from Alexa (McCarthy) and Celeste (Dyck) coming off the bench. This was an important win tonight as Calgary has been pretty tough on west division team. So to get the win was big for us.”

UFV was led Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC and Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba both with game high 26 point performances. Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC added 13 points and a team high 13 rebounds, as UFV out rebounded Calgary 45 to 21 for the game.

The Dinos were led by Tamara Jarrett, Calgary, Alberta with a 18 point performance. Jenna Kaye, Sackville, NB added 15 points for the Dinos as four different Calgary players were in double figures.

The Cascades host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday night (January 7th) at 5PM, at the Envision Athletic Center.
