Lab Skills Contest From 1996 to 2005, local schools from the Fraser Valley were invited to enter teams of four Grade 12 students in the UFV Chemistry Lab Skills Contest. This contest was hosted by the Department of Chemistry in conjunction with National Chemistry Week. Team members spent a full day working in the UFV laboratories and completed at least two experiments: one quantitative, and the other qualitative. Teams were assessed on the basis of the accuracy and precision of their quantitative results and the quality of their qualitative work. Most recently, members of the winning team received $100 each, with smaller amounts being awarded to members of the second- and third-placed teams. The winning school received a plaque to keep for one year, and a reference book for use in its library or laboratory. All participants received a custom-designed T-shirt. The table below lists the winners of the contest in past years. Chemistry Department Awards Each year the Department of Chemistry presents awards to students who demonstrate outstanding achievements in the chemistry courses taken that year. 1. Outstanding achievement in first-year chemistry This award is made possible through the Department's participation in the CRC Press Chemistry Award program which is sponsored by the Taylor and Francis Group, publishers of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Value of award: Book (approximate value $100) Winner selected by members of the Chemistry Department.
2. Outstanding achievement in second-year chemistry This award is currently sponsored by Fisher Scientific. Value of award: $100 Winner selected by members of the Chemistry Department.
3. Canadian Society for Chemistry Silver Medal The Canadian Society for Chemistry Silver Medal is awarded annually to the most outstanding student who has completed the penultimate year of a chemistry program during the preceding 12 months.
4. Outstanding Achievement by a Student Graduating with a Chemistry Major Candidates must have completed a Chemistry major with a good GPA and must have made a significant contribution to the Department of Chemistry during their time at UFV. This award is currently sponsored by Fisher Scientific. Value of the award: $100 The winner is selected by members of the Chemistry Department.
UFV Undergraduate Research Excellence Awards UFV Undergraduate Research Excellence Awards of up to $1000 are presented each year to those students who have completed outstanding research projects under the supervision of a UFV faculty member.
