Chemical Kinetics and Thermodynamics

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to thermodynamics with applications to phase and chemical equilibria. Topics include principles of chemical kinetics including enzyme kinetics and reaction rate theory. Laboratory experiments illustrate lecture material.

COURSE PREREQUISITES:

CHEM 113 and 114 ; plus PHYS 111, and 112 or PHYS 105; plus MATH 111 and 112.

(MATH 211 is highly recommended.)

  • Introduction to Thermodynamics. The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics;
  • The First Law of Thermodynamics;
  • Thermochemistry. Termodynamic cycles;
  • Thermodynamic Potentials. Spontaneity and Equilibrium;
  • Phase Equilibria;
  • Chemical Equilibria;
  • Introduction to Chemical Kinetics. Rate laws;
  • Complex kinetics. Enzyme kinetics;
  • Collision theory. Transition state theory;
