Business Start-up and Business Skills certificate

Do you want to operate your own business but don’t know where to start? Learn from the experts how to be successful. This program helps you explore self-employment as a realistic career path, assess your entrepreneurial potential, explore various business opportunities, prepare a business plan, and have a working model of a business in place upon graduation. This 180-hour certifi cate consists of 11 core courses and three elective courses and must be completed within three years. The courses in this program may be taken separately or applied to the Business Start-up and Business Skills certificate.

Business Startup Intro
In this introductory module we will discuss characteristics of entrepreneurship, the attitude and attributes helpful in an entrepreneurial career (you will develop a self-assessment and analysis of your own attitude and attributes), business success and failures, an overview of the necessary contents for a business plan, basics of market research and tools, as well as techniques and resources for this research.

Business Marketing
Marketing basics and strategies are covered in this module, as well as how to develop a marketing budget. Advertising, networking, sales, sales promotion, corporate identity, direct marketing, publicity, and all other elements of a promotional mix form part of these strategies. Learn how to set your prices, create incentives,
excel in customer service, and deal with the logistics of getting your product or service delivered to your target audience.

Successful Selling in the 21st Century
Selling the sales formula is vital for successful selling in the 21st century. Just as the BEDMAS formula is required to solve complex algebraic questions, likewise, the sales formula provides the sales professional with a system that off ers a 93% success rate compared to just 42% for those with no selling system. The sales profession is presently being redefi ned by seven key factors that have made the traditional sales role irrelevant and ineff ective, while driving down margins. The sales formula will provide you with a system and skill set necessary to make a positive impact on your customers’ business.

Business Research
Learn to conduct research for your business venture in this module, in a computer lab (basic computer skills are required). You will research your business environment, the industry in which you operate and its trends, the impact of the economy, and barriers to entry and growth. We guide you through your competitive analysis, look at the key participants and show you means to identify your major competitors. All of this information forms part of a business plan and will help you determine your competitive advantage. No class May 21.

Planning for Your Own Business
If you don’t have a comprehensive business plan you need one! This practical, hands-on course covers key elements of the business plan. Text: Preparing Effective Business Plans, available at the UFV bookstore. Purchase required text at the UFV bookstore prior to class.
