Floral Design certificate

The following courses are part of the Floral Design certificate program and will offer you an in-depth, comprehensive training that is designed to prepare you for direct employment in the fl oral industry. Along with
a significant theory component, the program is practical and current in terms of course content and relevancy to the field. Emphasis is on mastering the correct mechanics and basic shapes of floral design using fresh, treated and dried fl oral products. You will also have the opportunity to learn some advanced techniques. The program consists of six modules. Each course may be taken separately or applied to the certificate.

Christmas Arrangements will be off ered in the fall of 2012.
Floral Design – Basics I
This course will provide a fundamental knowledge of fl ower arranging, and an introduction to Latin and common plant names. Topics include introduction to fl oral tools and supplies, care and handling of fl owers, preparation and planning, plant identifi cation and design. Please bring scissors, wire cutters and a paring knife to the fi rst class. You will make your own fl oral arrangements to take home. Flowers and fl oral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design – Basics II
Prerequisite: Floral Design Basics I.
This course covers the skills necessary to work independently on basic fl ower arrangements. Topics include sales, pricing, plant identifi cation, and advanced design work. Please bring scissors, wire cutters and a paring knife to the fi rst class. You will make your own fl oral arrangements to take home. Flowers and fl oral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design Special Occasion/Silk and Dried
Prerequisite: Floral Design Basics II.
This module covers the skills needed to decorate with a variety of materials other than flowers, and to incorporate floral and non-floral products into an arrangement. Topics include historical background of special holidays, product information (candles, balloons, Styrofoam, spray paint, ribbon), hospital guidelines for flowers, plant identifi cation, and designs (display with fl owers, fruit candles). Flowers and fl oral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design Sympathy and Church
Prerequisite: Floral Design Basics II.
This module covers funeral and other church decorations. Sales and invoicing will also be covered. Topics include plant identifi cation and designs (casket sprays, funeral bouquets, wreaths, baskets, and church bouquets. Flowers and fl oral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design Wedding
Prerequisite: Floral Design Basics II.
This module will provide the fundamental skills to produce simple wedding bouquets. Plant identifi cation will be continued. Topics include marketing (how to sell wedding flowers, advertising), plant identifi cation, and designs (all around, cascade, hand-tied, and contemporary bouquets, hair flowers, corsages, church fl owers, including pew decorations and candelabras). Flowers and fl oral supplies are included in the course fee.
