Assessing Risk and Understanding Violence in Youth
This course provides an introduction of the field of risk/ threat assessment, intervention, and violence prevention. Gain knowledge for assessing an individual’s potential for violence, with a focus on using multi-disciplinary collaborative practices. A particular emphasis will be placed on prevention strategies and intervention techniques. Various psycho-social and developmental factors that contribute to aggression will be examined, along with an in-depth exploration of individual pathology and family, school, and social dynamics. This course will assist individuals in addressing violence along the continuum from high-end violence, including school shootings, to bullying behaviours, while emphasizing the importance of building policies and practices that create safe school cultures.

Couples Workshops: Building Healthy Relationships and Handling Confl ict in Relationships
Workshops are based on well documented research principles designed to help couples communicate and manage confl ict more effectively and to enhance their friendship and the foundation of their relationships. Intercultural Communication Competence for Overseas Experiences
Going abroad? What are your expectations of your overseas experience? What do you hope to gain from it, and how will you prepare for the learning experiences, and any misunderstandings or obstacles you may meet on your journey? This introductory course will provide, through case studies and experiential learning, a framework for preparing for the overseas assignment.

Interpersonal Communication Skills
Learn and/or improve the art and the science of effective communication. This course explains basic communication theory as it applies to personal life, community, and the workplace. Effective communication can help build and enhance credibility and confi dence communication skills. Topics include active listening, giving and receiving criticism, dealing with diff erent personality types, and nonverbal communication.

Myths and Realities of Addiction
Utilizing theories built around the science of the brain, the science of addiction, culture (families, society, etc.), self-efficacy, and philosophy, this course will help participants to “make sense” of addictive behaviours. While each session contains a set list of frequently asked questions about addiction and treatment, participants are encouraged to share their personal experiences and queries concerning the dysfunction of addiction. Perspectives such as “addicts choose to do drugs”; “once an addict, always an addict”; “addicts need tough love”; and many others will also be examined for validity.

Understanding Anger and Anxiety
This class is intended to help people understand the link between anxiety and anger. It is science-based but is accessible to everyone from the highly educated to the lay-person with no exposure to psychology. It will use the latest research and many case examples to illustrate the common theme that underlies these conditions.
