Basic Hatmaking Workshop
Learn to design, block, and shape a hat on a headblock. You’ll have the chance to finish one straw or furfelt capline/ hood with daccor and or trim within the workshop time limit. Specific millinery supplies can be purchased from the instructor in class and a cost sheet and suggested supply list can be picked up at registration prior to the first class.

Ceramics Introductory
This course will focus on in-depth coil and slab method demonstrations to the class, which will also include demonstrations on attaching the clay pieces, the use of grog, and carving in coloured slip. Then you’ll practise using coils to make a bowl or vase, plaques made with slabs, more exploration of slabs to create houses or boxes, mobiles made with hand shapes, relief drawing and painting in on slabs and a project of your choice.

Ceramics Intermediate
In this course we’ll focus on creating more elaborate works with detail and colour. We’ll begin with plaques with glass (also called mosaic tiles), we will explore different froms of creating large bowls, creating vases, garden balls and cones and the last project of choice. This course will be guided through attention to the finished detail with particular focus on surface texture and design.

Drawing Basics
Bring your sketch pad and pencils and share your love of drawing in this 10-hour introductory
course. Participants will learn about still life contouring, blind contour and gesture, symbols,
patterns, face and organic/non-organic in this hands-on program. Participants must supply
their own pencil kit (HB 1-5 leads) and 11 x 17 sketch pad (watercolour quality), and erasers.
Instructor Doreen Bell holds a degree in fine aarts and is a high school teacher with many years of teaching art in both BC and schools and in Mexican universities.

Drawing Intermediate
This course will further utilize shade and space with line and mark making. You will be working with pen and ink creating an in-depth landscape with a building. To increase the students skills in line and shade you will explore drawing draped materials and a still life composition. The next lesson will include drawing the human form in clothing to further explore line shade. The remaining lessons will cover portrait drawing with grids. Lastly our class will do a dot-todot
exercise with students using their imagination to complete the project.

Painting Introductory
You will create 2D images that will explore strategies and techniques of pattern and design and mark making. The class will explore symbols and will practice ancient symbols and create a scroll with charcoal. The remainder of the course will research mark making, a dot-to-dot exercise with mixed media and a drawing of still life, a magazine and paint creation and a still life, landscape or portrait drawing completed by painting. You will address personal, cultural,
and historical contexts.

Painting Intermediate
In this course you will receive an overview of the historical master painters, Klee, Kandinsky, Miro and Klimt. The lesson plans include the exploration of magazines with mixed media. Roshenburg style abstract rules will lead up to the next creation. You will also cover a blind contour drawing including pencil, pen and ink, and a mixed media project exploring aerial perspective. By the last project, you will be well versed in drawing and mixed media, allowing you to create your own project. We will use conventional and unconventional painting tools.

This course is designed peoplel who want to learn by making their own projects in a hands-on, intensive seven-week filmmaking course. Digital technology is a powerful tool that aspiring filmmakers have at their disposal today. The course will prepare you to pursue creative or entrepreneurial visions as an independent filmmaker, corporate/ commercial producer, or documentary filmmaker. This is a complete A–Z film/video program. It covers all the vital areas of filmmaking from pre-production to production process, and includes real-world experience by creating your own video at the end of the seven-week course.

Sewing Beginners
Learn the basic sewing techniques on your own machine in this beginner course. You will learn sewing terminology as well as how to practice easy stitches. Begin by selecting a
pattern, reading pattern symbols and what they mean, fabric preparations, pattern layout and fabric cutting. We will cover how to buy the best fabrics and notions. The project for this class is a skirt with an elastic waistband. Please bring your sewing machine in good working order with all the accessories. Please bring scissors and thread to first class, all other supplies will be discussed at the first session.

Beginning Harmony — NEW
Prerequisite: a good understanding of basic music reading and notation, and knowledge of scales and cords. This course covers the fundamentals of traditional ditonic harmony, including four-voice writing (soprano, alto, tenor, bass), spacing of chords, voice leading,
cadences, handling of inversions, non-harmonic tones, elementary modulation, and relative major and minor keys. This course would be useful for someone wishing to write for a church or amateur choir, or someone just interested in the harmonic structure of music, including pop music.
