Digital Media & Photography
This part-time program consists of seven core courses and two electives to be completed over three years. It is designed to give you grounding in important theoretical aspects of art form and design and also provide knowledge and practice in the most current software tools for creating, integrating, and manipulating digital photographs, graphics, and videos. These courses can be taken as part of the program or as individual courses.

Adobe Flash Animation Basic
Flash is the leading rich-media platform on the web. This course is a project-oriented approach to creation of graphics, motion and animation, rich user interfaces, special effects and ActionScript. You will learn to create banners, interactive menus, simple games, and even a whole website in Flash CS4. We will integrate videos, photographs, animated drawings, and sound effects for an impressive and captivating rich-media experience.

Adobe InDesign Basics
In this course we will explore the latest tool for page layout and electronic pre-press file preparation. As an Adobe product, InDesign CS4 is designed to work together with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat, enhancing compatibility. You will gain basic experience with the
software as you work with page layout creation, create and format text, input and manipulate images, and gain a basic understanding of colour as it relates to printing. No class October 13.

Advanced Photoshop: Photograph Retouching and Repair
Prerequisite: Photoshop Basics or equivalent experience
Are you a professional or hobbyist who does a lot of repairing, retouching, or working with photography in Adobe Photoshop? Do you wish you knew more about all the options available to help correct, optimize, or repair the photos you deal with on a day-to-day basis? This advanced Adobe Photoshop CS4 class is exclusively dedicated to repairing, retouching, and manipulating photography. Through handson exercises, demos, and projects, you will learn about optimizing colour and grayscale images, advanced colour correction, RAW manipulation, photo enhancement techniques, advanced retouching techniques, montage, and masks, as well as advanced colour space handling and workflow management for the correction of imagery.

Digital Illustration with Photoshop
Prerequisite: Basic Photoshop or equivalent experience.
Are you an artist or illustrator interested in exploring the digital canvas? Discover the power of Adobe Photoshop CS4 as a medium for drawing, painting, and illustration. Adobe Photoshop CS4’s powerful tools and robust features extend far beyond simple photo retouching and manipulation; they are a playground waiting to be discovered in the hands of an artist. In this course we will look at a variety of digital illustration styles, techniques, and tricks to bring the look of traditional and CG art to life on the computer screen. You will use a digital tablet and Photoshop to create several hands-on artistic projects, exploring Photoshop as an art tool. You are expected to already have a fundamental understanding of Photoshop, as well as basic drawing and painting skills. Please bring a memory stick with at least 256 mb storage capacity to class to store and move your projects.

Digital Photography — An Introduction for the Absolute Beginner
This six-hour course is designed for people with very little experience with a digital camera and/or a computer. It will cover basic camera operation, transferring images from the
camera to the computer, opening/resizing/saving photos, and some simple photo enhancement techniques using Adobe Photoshop CS4. Take this course if you are very new to digital photography and/or computers. Be sure to bring the camera connection cord and CD that came with your digital camera if you have them.

Digital Photography Basics
If you are becoming frustrated with always using the auto mode on your camera, consider taking this 15-hour course. Once you have a better understanding of your camera and
how to use it in different light conditions, you’ll be much more confident taking photographs. You will also learn basic photo management and enhancement techniques using Adobe Photoshop CS4. This is a shortened version of the 30-hour course and shouldn’t be seen as a preparation for that course. Digital Photography
In this 30-hour course you will gain a better understanding of how to use your digital camera in a variety of light conditions. You will develop an effective workflow, from camera to photo
editor to output. Using Adobe Photoshop CS4, you will learn a variety of enhancement techniques that will improve the look of your photos. This course includes everything that is covered in Digital Photography Basics but is more comprehensive. You will have more time to practice with your camera and with photo enhancement techniques using Photoshop. Digital Slide Show — The New Photo Album
A slide show is a series of chosen images combined with music and/or narration that tell a story which can be shared with friends or relatives through the mediums of TV, websites,
and email. Share all those images on your hard drive and make show-and-tell cool again! The course will explore how to go from the ordinary to a show that will amaze your viewers by using unique techniques. The course will lead you through the process from selecting your images, preparing and sequencing them, adding transitions, music, narration, motion and captions to the final step of output options: DVD, website, email and many more. You will be required to do assignments so on the fourth night you will have a completed show to share in class. The software used is Pro Show Gold.

Digital Video: Making a DVD Movie
This course will show you how to take your home movies and transfer them onto a computer for processing in order to make a DVD movie, which you can watch on your TV. The course will show you how to use special software called NLE (non-linear editing) from Pinnacles, which captures, edits, and makes a DVD.

Dreamweaver Essentials
This is one of the most affordable and comprehensive Dreamweaver courses offered in the Lower Mainland. Dreamweaver is the market-leading tool used by professionals to design, develop, and maintain websites. You will learn how to plan, define, and produce your websites; edit and manage existing websites; format text for the web; create and modify tables to display information; position content on your pages; use templates and library items to create consistency in your designs; use Behaviours to create JavaScript rollovers and pop-up
windows; and utilize the power of CSS and XHTML to design effective, professional web presentations. Familiarity with the web is essential and knowledge of HTML, although not required, would be very useful. Note: This course is taught in Microsoft Windows. Photography — 35mm to Digital
Learn the basics of 35mm and digital photography. You will explore all of the elements required to take great pictures as you develop a critical eye and learn what makes a photograph work and why. Topics covered include camera controls, shutter speeds and depth of field, the effects of different types of film in natural and artificial light, selecting and using lenses, visual composition, and working with your flash. Bring your unloaded SLR (Single Lens Reflex) 35mm or digital camera to class.

Photography — 35mm to Digital AdvancedThis course will cover a quick review of Photography Basics, such as composition, exposure, and camera operation. Move on to learn fine-tuning exposure control and film manipulation,
advanced wide-angle techniques for professional-looking results, creative macro photography, macro flash, and advanced techniques for photographing scenics, flowers, and animals, as well as photographing people with professional-looking results. Controlling lighting and exposure will be covered as well as advanced posing details. The only classroom session will be on Wed, April 7, and you will decide on five field trips to be held on weekends — weather and holidays permitting.

Web Design Basics
This course will explore the many facets of website design and development and some ways that the internet is being used by artists and designers for promotion of their work and as a site-specific medium. You’ll learn the basics of web page creation, user-centered design principles, web authoring and editing, and design techniques for interactivity.

Web Design II
Building upon what was covered in Web Design I, this course focuses on current web standards and best practices to design accessible, well crafted, and professional websites using XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Web Design II is taught by an industry professional with over a decade of commercial web development experience. You will learn CSS elements such as layers, the box model, inheritance, and customer classes, which separate design from content to create websites that are easy to maintain, ensure a common look and feel, and work in all browsers. Web Design I is a prerequisite although students with a thorough understanding of HTML can register after receiving permission from the program coordinator.
