American Sign Language (ASL) complies with the provincial guidelines for college level. Courses are taught by immersion, all instructors are deaf, and all communication is  isual. American Sign Language is the fourth most widely used language in Canada. These courses may be taken for personal or professional reasons. School districts now accept ASL Prep I–IV with a pass on the government master exam as equivalent to the new high school courses in introductory American Sign Language. Please contact your high school counsellor for more information.



American Sign Language Prep I
This course takes students like you who have no knowledge of sign language to the point where you can begin to function in simple situations in the deaf community. Deaf culture and ASL grammar will be taught in context as well as visual gestures. The required text is
available at UFV Abbotsford bookstore.

American Sign Language Prep II
This course is a continuation of the Vista Level I curriculum. It will examine telling/asking about families, practising language and grammar functions, giving directions using special references, and ordinal numbers.

American Sign Language Prep III
This course begins with a cumulative review of Prep I and II, including norms for getting attention, understanding the role of name signs, negotiating a signing environment, asking for repetition, meeting others, and gaining basic information about the daily lives of deaf people. Building on Prep II, you will begin to make simple requests and give directions, and learn how to identify other people. Numbers will be introduced and you’ll develop a basic understanding
of various types of verbs.

American Sign Language Prep IV
Learn how to discuss families in greater detail, including occupations and ages. The concept of role shifting will be introduced and applied to descriptions of others. Daily routines, clock numbers, and history of deaf people in the US and Canada will be discussed. Learn rules
for interrupting conversations, and other rules for social interaction. This course ends with a cumulative review of Prep I–IV.

Italian I: The Language, The Culture
This course is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Italian and will prepare them to communicate in simple Italian, with emphasis on oral practice and use of the language. In addition, there will be discussion about the culture of Italy.

Punjabi Beginners I
The growing diversity of our community is reflected through the many languages that our residents speak, one of which is Punjabi. Learn the basics of verbal and written communication of this language that comes from northern India. This knowledge can be of benefit to people working in law enforcement, the nursery industry, health care, education,
or those who are simply interested in learning Punjabi.

Spanish I
Spanish is the most widely spoken romance language, boasting more than 200 million speakers worldwide. It is the language of almost all of South and Central America and is one of the United Nations five official languages. This beginner-level course will emphasize conversational Spanish, vocabulary development, and will also explore the Spanish culture. French Language I
This course introduces students to the French language by an intensive study of important aspects of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar through the use of audio-visual techniques such as flashcards, slides, videotapes and the multimedia laboratory. Students are taught to speak, understand, read and write the language by the direct association of visual and aural concepts with their expression in French. The basic goal is to develop “creative communication.”

Introduction to French
French 100 is an introductory course for those who have had little (less than Grade 11) or no previous French instruction. The vocabulary and grammatical structures are presented through
the use of body language and audio/visual techniques such as pictures, tapes and videos, as well as written material. Students will learn to communicate in relatively natural and spontaneous speech and also develop reading and writing skills. The course covers the equivalent of Grade 11 material. Note: Not open to students with French 11 except with permission of instructor or department head.

Introduction to Mandarin I
This course will introduce you to the basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Mandarin Chinese, and to Chinese culture.

Introduction to Punjabi I
Students who have little or no previous knowledge of Punjabi (Gurmukhi) script will learn to read and write at the basic level. We will use the communicative approach to develop the ability to speak, comprehend, read, and write Punjabi while exploring the Punjabi culture.

Intermediate Punjabi I
This course is an introduction to Punjabi (Gurmukhi) script and enhances previous knowledge of modern Punjabi language. It deals with the important grammatical features of Standard Punjabi and its syntax and morphology. The course is restricted to students with familiarity with spoken contemporary Punjabi, but no to little knowledge of reading and writing Gurmukhi Script.

Japanese Language I


This course, designed for students who have little or no knowledge of Japanese, offers a comprehensive introduction to modern Japanese, through the study of vocabulary, grammar and culture. The course will include an intensive study of the Japanese writing systems (Hiragana, Katakana). Through the use of various communicative techniques, we teach you to speak, understand, read and write Japanese. There is extensive use of the multi-media
laboratory.

Russian Language I

This course introduces the Russian language by an intensive study of the Cyrillic alphabet, the case and verb system, and essential vocabulary. Through the use of various audio/visual techniques to avoid translation, we teach you to speak, understand, read and write Russian by directly associating a visual idea with its verbal expression in Russian. Dialogues and conversations are placed within everyday situations to emphasize the “creative” aspects of
learning Russian. Considerable time is spent discussing life in the former Soviet Union to familiarize you with Russian culture. There is extensive use of the multimedia laboratory.

Third-Year Japanese II
Prerequisite: Intermediate Japanese II
This course is the second of a two-semester sequence of Third-year Japanese. The course aims to develop four communication skills of the Japanese language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as conversation strategies. Authenticity of verbal and written communications, in particular cultural situations, is pursued.
