American Sign Language (ASL) complies with the provincial guidelines for college level. Courses are taught by immersion, all instructors are deaf, and all communication is  isual. American Sign Language is the fourth most widely used language in Canada. These courses may be taken for personal or professional reasons. School districts now accept ASL Prep I–IV with a pass on the government master exam as equivalent to the new high school courses in introductory American Sign Language. Please contact your high school counsellor for more information.

American Sign Language Prep I
This course takes students like you who have no knowledge of sign language to the point where you can begin to function in simple situations in the deaf community. Deaf culture and ASL grammar will be taught in context as well as visual gestures. The required text is available at UFV bookstore.

American Sign Language Prep II
Prerequisite: Successful completion of American Sign Language Prep I
This course is a continuation of the Vista Level I curriculum. It will examine telling/asking about families, practising language and grammar functions, giving directions using special references, and ordinal numbers. No class Apr 9.

American Sign Language Prep III
Prerequisite: Successful completion of American Sign Language Prep II
This course begins with a cumulative review of Prep I and II, including norms for getting attention, understanding the role of name signs, negotiating a signing environment, asking for repetition, meeting others, and gaining basic information about the daily lives of deaf people. Building on Prep II, you will begin to make simple requests and give directions, and learn how to identify other people. Numbers will be introduced and you’ll develop a basic
understanding of various types of verbs. No class May 21.

American Sign Language Prep IV
Prerequisite: Successful completion of American Sign Language Prep III
Learn how to discuss families in greater detail, including occupations and ages. The concept of role shifting will be introduced and applied to descriptions of others. Daily routines, clock numbers, and history of deaf people in the US and Canada will be discussed. Learn rules for interrupting conversations, and other rules for social interaction. This course ends with a cumulative review of Prep I-IV.

Gaelic Beginners
Many Canadians have a Gaelic background but are unfamiliar with their ancestral tongue. This course will introduce you to this lyrical language. Irish, Scottish, and Manx Gaelic form a branch of the Celtic tree of Indo-European languages. We concern ourselves in this course specifi cally with Scots Gaelic. In this course we will follow the Teach Yourself Gaelic textbook and will emphasize conversational Gaelic vocabulary development, idioms, phrases, and expressions as well as an informal approach to cultural aspects of the Gaelic society.

Punjabi Beginners I
The growing diversity of our community is refl ected through the many languages that our residents speak, one of which is Punjabi. Learn the basics of verbal and written communication of this language that comes from northern India. This knowledge can be of benefi t to people working in law enforcement, the nursery industry, health care, education, or those who are simply interested in learning Punjabi.

Spanish I
Spanish is the most widely spoken romance language, boasting more than 200 million speakers worldwide. It is the language of almost all of South and Central America and is one of the United Nations’ fi ve offi cial languages. This beginner-level course will emphasize conversational Spanish, vocabulary development, and will also explore the Spanish culture. The required text for Abbotsford sections is Uno, Dos, Tres..., which is available at the UFV Abbotsford bookstore. The required text for Chilliwack sections is Spanish Made Simple, available at the UFV Chilliwack bookstore.
