Degree Pathways
The degree you choose to undertake while at UFV will require a lot of thought. Throughout their years of study, most students will change their degree pathway at least once. As we learn about new academic areas that we were unaware of before, we often realize that we have more interest in subject areas other than our initial direction.

That being said, the first thing to consider when choosing your pathway is what interests you. This is university - which you are paying for - make the most of it and pick something that you want to learn about! The advantage at UFV is that if you are interested in multiple subject areas, most faculties have minor programs to further broaden your academic interests. For instance, you can satisfy your craving for science with a biology major while honing your acting skills with a minor in theatre.

However, if you become lost in all of the amazing courses and programs available at UFV, use the Academic Calendar as your guide – it is located in the upper right hand corner on the UFV home page. The “Program Index” within the calendar offers insight into the different degree options available, while the “Course Descriptions” provide specific information about the class and which prerequisites or co-requisites they require.
Furthermore, if you are interested in medical school, it is important to know the prerequisite courses necessary to be considered by each university. Although many medical schools require the same general pre-medical classes (introductory biology, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, etc.) some may insist on specific courses. To be sure, research the specific information for any medical school that you are interested in applying to. 
To get started, The Pre-med Student Association (PMSA) offers a Canadian Medical School information session every fall.  This presentation compares and contrasts medical universities across the country—a starting point for determining which school may be right for you.  Check out our website for more detailed information on each of the different Canadian medical schools. Furthermore, the centerfold of this magazine also highlights and compares these same key points.

As you continue on your journey, it may be beneficial to keep a hard copy of all the courses required by each of the medical schools as well as what is required within your degree program. This way you can plan which classes to take each semester as some courses are only offered at certain times during the academic year. Additionally, managing this information is a way to make sure you stay on track with your timeline goals, thus reducing stress (students have enough of this to deal with already!). Lastly, we suggest that you make regular appointments with the UFV Science Advice Centre as well as attend medical school information sessions on a semester/yearly basis, just in case any changes have been made to graduation or entry requirements.
