Gwen Point

A passionate ambassador for Aboriginal tourism, Point was publicly recognized as an “outstanding performer” at the 2007 Aboriginal Tourism Association of British Columbia (ATBC) awards ceremony for her work with the Chilliwack Powwow. Fittingly, she was presented with the Coast Hotels and Resorts Ambassador award, which recognizes excellence and innovation in the province’s growing Aboriginal tourism sector.

“It is a great honour to receive this award,” says Point. “It is encouraging and validates the work that has gone into organizing the Chilliwack Powwow throughout the years. I share this award with the Chilliwack Powwow committee members, the volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the event, and the sponsors who help make it possible.

“To do anything worthwhile is not easy, and no one individual can do it all on his or her own. I have personally witnessed the commitment of individuals, businesses, First Nations leaders, and whole families, to this event,” she says.  “I have also seen the positive socio-economic impact the powwow has had on individuals, families, and communities. It provides a venue where families can enjoy champion dancers and singers from all over North America.”

Point teaches the popular Stó:lō History course at UCFV and works with both the History department and the School of Social Work and Human Services to deliver various First Nations Studies courses.  She is also a PhD student at SFU.
