A few cultural adjustments

ufv RN students with dummy
Second-year nursing students (Kiran Davesar, Raman Dhaliwal, Rosy Dhillon, Herjote Gill, Sukhpreet Gill, and Ruby Mann, with instructor Pam Causton looking on) recently took on the challenge of converting this high-techhuman patient simulation doll, usually dressed as an old woman and known as Mrs. Sweetwater, into a male baptized Sikh, complete with turban and beard, whom they dubbed Davinder Singh Sidhu. The concepts of cultural awareness were emphasized in this exercise, as many of the patients that UFV nursing students will encounter once they graduate are of Indo-Canadian heritage.

Help make a child’s Christmas wish come true: sponsor an Angel today

This year the Angel Tree program has experienced an increase of over 40 percent in applications. We hope that the UFV community will come together to help fill this need.

The Angel Trees are now displayed in the alumni hall in Abbotsford and the cafeteria in Chilliwack with each angel representing a child and their gift wish.

Once you choose an angel from the tree, please register the number with Sheila at Student Life Sheila.McKay@ufv.ca . Unwrapped gifts are due no later than Fri, Nov 27, to University House.

Clubs, departments, associations, groups, and individuals can adopt entire families, and/or contribute $100 towards a food hamper for families.

Thank you in advance for supporting UFV's Angel Tree program.

Goodbye to ucfv.bc.ca

If you were working at UFV (then UCFV) in or around 2004, you will recall the shift from the website address www.ucfv.bc.ca to www.ucfv.ca and email addresses from name.name@ucfv.bc.ca to name.name@ucfv.ca . It was done to simplify our domain names and make it easier for people to reach us via the web or email.

The ‘bc.ca’ domain officially expired earlier this year.  At this point, there should be no remaining instances of the ‘bc.ca’ structure actively used in faculty or staff email addresses, or on any legacy web pages. Any that do exist may work sporadically within the UFV network systems, but will not function outside of the institution.

The expired ‘bc.ca’ domain information will be removed from all servers as of January 1, 2010.
Your action is required by Dec 31, 2009, ONLY if you continue to use an email address with ‘ucfv.bc.ca’ in it or have any links posted to your web page(s) with ‘ucfv.bc.ca’ in them. Given that this address has not functioned outside of the institution for some time, it is unlikely that any external contacts continue to use it for active web links or incoming messages to UFV (their efforts would yield an error message or be bounced back).

If this impacts you, please be sure to make any adjustments required prior to December 31, 2009.
Questions? Contact Robyn Harcott, web systems administrator, at robyn.harcott@ufv.ca or at local 4666.

Thank you,
Kim Lawrence
Director, Marketing & Communications

Thurs — Jews and Palestinians: Historic Roots of the Conflict

UFV political scientist Ron Dart will speak on this ancient and current conflict at Abbotsford Learning Plus next week. It goes back for centuries, and at times seems incapable of resolution: the ongoing war between Jews and Palestinians. Geography aside, it's a conflict that affects us all. How did it begin? Is there any way out? Ron Dart helps us explore the background -- and the possibilities.

Thurs, Nov 26
Abbotsford Recreation Centre
10 am to noon.
Fee is $2, plus admission to the Rec Centre.

Thurs — Copyright and intellectual property expert to speak at UFV

Who owns information? Why can’t you just make copies of whatever you’d like? How do we compensate the creators of intellectual property when it’s so easy to download so many things for free?

These are the types of questions that may arise when intellectual property expert and librarian Paul Whitney when he visits the UFV next week as the guest of the UFV Library and Information Technology program.

Guest speaker Paul Whitney, city librarian for the Vancouver Public Library, will discuss the status of the new copyright legislation (which is contentious and troubling for all Canadians, according to LIBIT program head Christina Neigel) as well as the Google Book Settlement, and other issues under debate that are related to intellectual property.

Thurs, Nov 26

Everyone welcome
