Former students being called for Student Outcomes survey
The 2010 BC Diploma, Associate Degree, and Certificate Student Outcomes (DACSO) survey is currently on. Former students of UFV and other public post- secondary institutions, who were enrolled in diploma, associate degree, or certificate programs between July 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009, in arts, sciences and applied program will be surveyed.
The survey is being conducted by R.A. Malatest and Associates Ltd. on behalf of BC Stats. DACSO is an annual survey, the results of which become part of the performance indicators in UFV's Accountability Framework (see: UFV's latest Accountability report for last year’s DACSO results http://www.ufv.ca/Assets/IRP/Institutional+Accountablity+Report+$!26+Plan+2009-10_to_2011-12.pdf). If you are being asked about this survey from former students please encourage them to take part in it.

Hockey games at the AE&SC: March 5 and 6 This is a commuter alert for those travelling to and from the UFV Abbotsford campus this weekend.
There are hockey games continuing at the AE&SC Fri, Mar 5 (at 7:30), and Sat, Mar 6 (at 8 pm) evenings. These games will directly impact anyone planning to travel to and/or park on the Abbotsford campus for classes on those evenings. Traffic will be congested and we will be actively managing our parking; both to accommodate university needs and to make our unused space available to event patrons.
For evening classes these nights, the following management will be in place:
Lots 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are protected for university use only, for students (with valid student ID cards) and employees (with valid parking passes or employee ID cards). This ID is necessary to verify your right to access the parking areas designated exclusively for university use. View map with marked lots here: http://www.ufv.ca/Assets/Facilities/Campus+map+parking.pdf On event nights, designated parking for women is provided in Lots 6 and 7.
Students in need of security are reminded to call 604-504-7441 local 5050 or for immediate assistance call 604 768 0279.
On event evenings, students who carpool, park for free. Carpooling students (min. two per vehicle) will be granted free parking (starting at 4:30 pm) in lots 7 and 10. Enter from MacKenzie Road.
T o avoid event traffic, arrive to campus early; use the alternate campus entrances off MacKenzie Road for entry to Lots 6-10. Use College Way for entry to Lots 1 and 2. (Those parked in Lot 1 and 2 may experience traffic congestion upon campus departure.)
University traffic arriving after 4:30 pm may be redirected to the exclusive lots for students and employees.
Those already legitimately parked in Lots 2, 2A, 4 and 5 on event evenings are not required to move their vehicle. At 7 pm all unoccupied university parking space will be made available to event patrons.
Vigorous enforcement of all parking regulations will be in effect.
Use extra caution. Consider pedestrian safety and visibility conditions in your drive to campus. Event nights involve different pedestrian movements from what we are normally used to.
Thank you.

Events
Today — Health Sciences students present health fair at Cottonwood Mall
Get ready to find out more about how to stay healthy, from teeth to toes, at a health fair presented by UFV students on Fri, March 5. Students from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Certified Dental Assistant, and Dental Hygiene programs have been hard at work on informative displays that they’ll be on hand to share at the Cottonwood Mall in Chilliwack.
Some of the topics covered by the displays include the effect of soft drinks on teeth, “meth mouth” (damage inflicted by methamphetamine use), hypertension, diabetes, prevention of falls, oral self-care for babies, smoking cessation, bowel health, tooth sensitivity, tooth whitening, risk factors for dental decay, and how oral health affects overall health.
The health fair will run all day from 9:30 am to 9 pm in the mall.
Students will be available to answer questions and provide information to the public.

Tues, March 9 — International Day for the Elimination of Racism
Please join us in commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Racism, a bit earlier than the official day on Sun, March 21. On that day in 1960, police in Sharpeville, South Africa opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid 'pass laws'. Proclaiming the day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
UFV joins communities around the world in working towards eliminating racism. This year’s theme is Race and Entertainment. Highlights of the evening include art displays and the review of a number of video clips with discussion about race and entertainment.

Wed, March 10 — Plecas to lecture on crime-reduction model
 |
|
Darryl Plecas | Unless you’re one of those people who profits from an illegal lifestyle, you probably agree that crime reduction is a noble goal. But did you know that it’s also the name given to a formal strategy to achieve that goal in British Columbia?
Numerous communities are trying out the “crime-reduction” model, an approach imported from Britain that sees stakeholder groups working closely together to target habitual and persistent criminals. The idea isn’t to simply get them off the streets and throw them in jail in an “in-and-out” cycle, but to help them gain access to the resources they need to address the underlying cause of their crime, such as addiction, poverty, mental illness, or lack of education.
Dr. Darryl Plecas, of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of the Fraser Valley, will be speaking about the crime-reduction model on as part of the UFV lecture series.

Mon, March 8 — International Women’s Day tea with Jean Scott
 |
|
Jean Scott | Join us for tea with UFV honorary degree holder Jean Scott to celebrate International Women’s Day on Mon, March 8, in the UFV Chilliwack student lounge (outside the library).
The Chilliwack library will serve coffee, tea, and cookies throughout the day from 9:30 am to 4 pm.
Dr. Jean Scott will be in the student lounge on the Chilliwack campus at 2 pm. The 97-year-old Scott is a local author, women’s rights activist, labour negotiator, co-founder of Chilliwack’s transition house, UFV honorary doctorate recipient, and Governor General’s Persons Case award winner.
International Women’s Day means many things to different people. The United Nations theme this year is “Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all.”
For Jean Scott, it means a chance to remind us that the struggle is not over yet and that all women are sisters no matter their ages or backgrounds.
This year UFV library is celebrating women’s successes. While acknowledging that women face challenges in many parts of the world, including at home in Canada, we decided to recognize a few of the amazing women of this university.
We’re featuring UFV trades student Courtney Tustian, who is studying joinery, student and library shelver Emma Dixon, who danced in the closing ceremonies at the 2010 Winter Olympics, Crown prosecutor Kathleen McIntosh, a 2002 governor general’s silver medal winner, artist Melanie Schambach, a 2004 visual arts grad, who uses art to partner with a Columbia orphanage and highlight human rights, Christine Lavery-Massarini, a 1997 aviation grad, who flies as a first officer for British Airways, and Dr. Jean Scott.
Watch for the upcoming display on the bulletin board at the entrance to the Chilliwack library.

March 15 — Olympics dietitian to speak on nutritional strategies for training and competition
 |
|
Nanci Guest | When elite athletes gather for competition, the margin between victory and defeat is small. Attention to detail can make that vital difference. Diet affects performance, and the nutritional strategies followed in training and competition will affect the success of training and therefore competitive success. Diet may have its biggest impact on training, and a nutrient-rich, well-balanced diet will help support consistent intensive training without the athlete succumbing to illness or injury, in addition to supporting adaptations to the training stimulus.
Nanci Guest will discuss some tips for that nutritional edge, as well as the effectiveness of popular supplements for performance and/or strength gains. Guest is a registered dietitian, certified personal trainer, and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. She was appointed as a sport nutrition consultant and supervising dietitian in the athlete’s village at the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. She has worked with various individual athletes and teams over the past decade as a sport dietitian and strength and conditioning coach. Nanci owns and operates Power Play — Nutrition, Fitness and Performance.

Between the Folds — A documentary film on the art and science of origami
The UFV Math Club presents Between the Folds, a documentary film on the art and science of origami. Between the folds is a 50-minute documentary film that shows how simple things done often just for fun, like paper-folding, may lead to important applications in science, if treated with dedication and passion. This inspirational movie chronicles the stories of 10 artists and scientists who abandoned their careers for the love of paper folding. The film paints a portrait of the remarkable artistic and scientific creativity that fuses science and sculpture, form and function, ancient and new. More at www.greenfusefilms.com
Everyone welcome!
