Cascades undefeated in February
The Cascades kicked off the month of February with an undefeated weekend sweep of cross-town rival Columbia Bible College in men’s and women’s volleyball and Thompson Rivers in men’s and women’s basketball.
The No. 9-ranked women’s volleyball team got things rolling first with a three-game sweep of the Bearcats on Fri night at the Envision Athletic Centre. The Cascades started strong against CBC, winning the first set, 25-12. The home side took the second set, 25-18 before closing out the match with a 25-20 win. The victory improves UCFV to 9-5 on the year. The Cascades have now won four of their last five matches and boast an impressive 5-2 record in 2008. UCFV hosts Selkirk Fri, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. and College of the Rockies Sat, Feb 9, 1 at pm at the Envision Athletic Centre.
The No. 3-ranked men’s volleyball team also downed the Bearcats 3-0 at the Envision Athletic Centre Friday. The Cascades won the first two sets, 25-22, before taking the third and final set, 26-24. With the win, UCFV improves to 11-3 on the year and the team has now won six of its last seven matches. Earlier this season, the Cascades beat CBC, 3-1 to snag bragging rights in the Battle of Abbotsford for 2007-08. Coming up, UCFV hosts Selkirk (Fri, Feb 8, at 7:45 pm) and College of the Rockies (Sat, Feb 9, at 2:45 pm).
The women’s basketball team continued the Cascades winning-streak with an 80-67 victory at Thompson Rivers on Saturday night. With the win, UCFV improves to 11-10 on the year and has now won five of its last seven road games. The Cascades are undefeated against the Wolfpack since joining the CIS in 2006-07 and are 3-0 against the squad this year. UCFV closes out regular season play this week when the team hosts No. 9-ranked Victoria on Thurs, Feb 7, at 6 pm and No. 2 UBC on Sat, Feb 9, at 6 pm. These match-ups mark the final two home games for UCFV this year as the team will be on the road throughout the playoffs.
The men’s basketball team wrapped-up a winning weekend for the Cascades with a 91-72 decision over TRU on Saturday night. The win was UCFV’s second-straight on the road and improved the team’s record to 11-10. The Cascades, who have won four of their last five games, are unbeaten against Thompson Rivers this season after sweeping the Wolfpack in October. UCFV closes out Canada West regular season play this week when the team hosts Pacific division rivals Victoria on Thurs Feb 7, at 6 pm and No. 5-ranked UBC on Sat Feb, 9, at 6 pm. The showdowns are the final two home games of the year for UCFV as the team will be on the road throughout the playoffs.

Wed — UCFV Mission campus library grand opening
UCFV Mission library renovations are complete and the library is again open for business. The UCFV library entrance is now located in the main hallway of the UCFV part of the campus.
Celebrate the grand opening of this great new student space by visiting on Wed, Feb 6 from 10 am–4 pm. Enjoy some cake and refreshments, meet library technician Lisa Morry, and explore the amenities:
● Group study room ● Quiet individual study carrels ● Four computer stations with networked printing ● Video and DVD viewing ● Reference collection ● Small circulation collection ● Access to locating, borrowing, and returning materials from other UCFV libraries and other college and university libraries

Students can also have materials from other UCFV libraries or other college or university libraries brought to them at the Mission campus. Students who live or study in Mission have the convenience of using a UCFV library close to their homes or classes.
Hours are as follows:
Mon: 1:30–7 pm Tues-Thurs: 10 am–4 pm Fri, Sat, Sun: Closed
To contact the Mission library, please call Lisa Morry at local 6009.

Thurs — Dr. Nicholas Romanov presents General Movement Theory
Dr. Nicholas Romanov, a two-time Olympic coach, author, educator, and a sport scientist with some 30 years of experience and hands-on work with athletes will present General Movement Theory: Necessity and Reality.
The advances we’ve made over the last century of modern science have developed our knowledge of human movement within the limited realm of mechanical, biomechanical, and physiological segments of our bodies without any clear cohesion of how they play a role as a single entity, acting in unison to achieve a desired movement in our environment. The interrelationship of movement should be taken a step further towards psycho-emotional and mental contributions of our movement.
The solidarity of our understanding of movement within our environment can provide a needed breakthrough for scientific research and practical application to benefit societal needs.
This lecture will outline steps taken in an attempt to develop a General Movement Theory.
Thurs, Feb 7 at 4 pm Abby B101, Lecture Theatre

Sleep: Learn recent discoveries about our favourite pastime
We spend about a third of lives asleep, but do we really know what sleep is all about? Seven out of ten of us experience frequent sleep problems and these become more frequent as we age. Recent studies have linked short and poor sleep to many modern maladies: diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, inflammation, stroke, and obesity. The past five years have been a boon for sleep researchers and we now understand much about all those too-few hours of daily unconsciousness.
Whether you sleep well or don’t feel you get enough, join UCFV’s Dave Harper for a workshop where you’ll learn about the science of sleep, its importance to our mental and physical health, and how to get that great night’s rest.
Mon, March 10 Noon to 1:30 pm Abby A225.
To register, please contact Tara Rozenek at tara.rozenek@ucfv.ca or local 4536.

This workshop will cover these topics and more to allow you to communicate clearly and effectively in your writing.
