A toast to a UFV legend

Scott Fast retirement
Okay, so he wasn't here for the first year when we offered Douglas College's curriculum at night school in high school classrooms, but Scott Fast has been teaching at every incarnation of UFV since 1975. Dozens came to share stories at his retirement function last week, including library director Kim Isaac, who recalled being one of Scott's first students. Follow UFV student teachers via their blog from the Caribbean

The Champions for Health Promoting Schools is a program that brings
15 student teachers from UFV to schools in Antigua/Barbuda, West Indies, for a four-week period. Working side-by-side with local educators, the students promote health education in innovative and effective ways that:

a) enrich the quality of teaching and learning in classrooms;
b) help students see opportunities to play leadership roles at school
and in the community;
c) relate school work to care for self, others, and the environment;
d) integrate skills for reading, music, drama, storytelling, and art
with health promotion; and
e) build bridges between community health projects and school projects,
for example, safe communities and environmental protection.

Their job is to:
a) raise awareness of how education and health work together to improve
the lives of young people;
b) model new teaching methods that energize students’ imagination,
curiosity, ambition and talent;
c) involve community partners such as Red Cross, hospitals, planned
parenthood, and the police in classroom activities.

The Antiguan students learn:
a) to take better care of themselves and others;
b) about the roles they can play as leaders, young citizens, helpers,
and care providers;
c) to apply what they are learning to decisions about health at home
and in the community;
d) to respect each other, take pride in their work, build knowledge and
skills, develop creative solutions to today’s problems, and approach
the future with optimism.

Please follow this blog throughout the month of May to find out more about the
Champions program as well as ask questions to our students as they teach the importance of physical education and health education.

Fall 2010 book adoptions due May 15

It’s time to get your books ordered for Fall semester. Please visit the online edoption site below to submit your orders. If you forgot your password or have not been supplied with one, please email me. You can also enter through the bookstore main site and click on faculty and order textbooks on line. http://ufv.bookware3000.ca/eSolution/adoption/

The courses will be accessible on the website by Fri, May 7.

You can also fill out an interactive or paper adoption form if you prefer.  It is available on the public drive under Temp and Bookstore, or from faculty reception. Please submit it to me by email or inter-campus mail.

Please ensure that you have a valid ISBN number and have verified the current edition. Be advised that editions do change and the edition you may want to use could be out of print or be subbed to the new edition by the distributor. If there is a access card needed with a text, please quote the appropriate ISBN # associated with that package.

Publisher reps have been pushing instructors to use custom publications that instructors can put together from various sources. Please note that this is not cost efficient. For some distributors the return policy is 10 or 15 per cent and can result in thousands of dollars that the department placing the order would be responsible for.

Textbook orders cannot be processed over the phone or by email, unless a form is attached.

The bookstore is currently carrying a large amount of stock. If department heads or instructors could take a quick look at our shelves and let us know if there is a book that is no longer being used, that would be great.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Joanne Hutter

You’re needed to help make Convocation 2010 a success!

Join Team Convocation 2010 and be a part of UFV’s premiere event! With four ceremonies in the Envision Athletic Centre in June, your assistance is required to ensure the successful staging of convocation so that our graduates receive a fitting acknowledgment of their accomplishment.

UFV has always been fortunate — and senior management has always been appreciative of — the volunteerism exhibited by staff, faculty, alumni, and even current students in getting involved and assisting at convocation.

Members of Team Convocation are involved in an event with a strong positive atmosphere. Food and refreshments will be provided and members will receive a very special Team Convocation keepsake!

Sign up for a shift to help with gowning, grad marshalling, ushers, document distribution, coat check, and more! We are also looking with a volunteer who has a Class 4 driving licence.

The four ceremonies are:
• Thursday June 10 at 9:30am and 2:30pm
• Friday June 11 at 9:30am and 2:30 pm

If you are unsure as to which ceremony you would like to help at, please check the ceremony/program line-up at www.ufv.ca/convocation or email convocation@ufv.ca for a volunteer shift schedule.

Once you’ve decided which ceremonies you’re available for, please email us and send a copy to your supervisor. If you have a specific area/position at Convocation that you would like to be involved in, please note this at this time. We are extremely appreciative of all help received and positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

To sign up, please send email to Auriel Heron, auriel.heron@ufv.ca , Marketing and Events Assistant.
