Reminder: Let info centre know about your events

A lot of people come to UFV’s info centre window, strategically located in the hall of building B on the Abbotsford campus. And info centre assistant Carol Abbott loves to help them. But sometimes she can’t help direct them because she’s hampered by the fact that nobody has told her about the event in question.

So even if you’re hosting a small-scale event, and especially if you’re hosting a big one, please make it part of your event-planning protocol to let Carol know about it by emailing her at
Carol.abbott@ufv.ca or phoning her at local 4604.

Thurs %u2014 South Asian fall lecture series

Social justice, constitutional values and the recognition of Muslim and Hindu personal law in South Africa will be discussed by Dr. Jan Neels from the University of Johannesburg.

Dr. Neels will evaluate the progressive recognition of Hindu and Muslim personal law in South Africa, utilizing the protection of socio-economically vulnerable parties and other constitutional values as criteria. Both the non-recognition of purely religious Hindu and Muslim marriages under apartheid and a project to introduce Muslim and perhaps Hindu personal law under the current constitutional dispensation will be critically discussed. A third approach, which may to a certain extent already be traced in recent decisions of the South African courts, will be suggested for future legal development in South Africa and possibly other multicultural societies.

Thurs, Oct 7
 7 pm
Abby F125 (University House)

All are welcome.

Mon, Oct 18 — Provost's forum:
“What does ‘entrepreneurial’ mean in an academic context?”

On Mon, Oct 18, from 8:30 to 10 am in Abby A225, we will hold the first of several Provost’s Forums. This inaugural forum will focus on Goal 3 in the Strategic Plan, which states that UFV will be innovative, entrepreneurial, and accountable in achieving our goals. At the foru we will address the question: “What does ‘entrepreneurial’ mean in an academic context?”

I expect a lively debate and discussion.

For those who are unable to attend in person, the address will be filmed and can be viewed by streaming video. I encourage all who can to attend or tune in and help us shape our future.

Eric Davis
Provost and Vice President, Academic

Math club talk: Myths and Math and the Ecology of Aphids

Speaker: Dr. Dave Gillespie (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and SFU)

Abstract:
This presentation will introduce the biological control of pest aphids in greenhouse crops. This should be as simple as putting things that eat aphids together with the aphids; however, these natural enemy introductions fail frustratingly often. Studies on the reasons for failure and on the improvement of control will introduce some simple theory from mathematical ecology, and show how understanding that theory helps to develop experimental approaches. This should provide opportunities for a wider discussion of mathematical and statistical analysis in ecological sciences.

Mon, Oct 18
4–5:20 pm
Room D225 (Abbotsford campus)

Everyone welcome!

Aided by his mercurial servant Ariel but stymied by the brutish monster Caliban, Prospero is a man with a mission. Combining romance, comedy and spectacle, The Tempest is truly ” the stuff that dreams are made on.”
