News
Appreciation and an invitation from the President
To all UFV colleagues,
I would like to express to each of you personally my sincere appreciation for the outstanding work you do to create a first class university experience for our students. I was especially proud to see your work recognized in the latest Canadian University Report published by the Globe and Mail. For the fifth year in a row we scored at or near the top for universities our size in many of the evaluation categories, and we received the most “A” grades of any public university in British Columbia.
Please join me and other members of UFV’s senior administrative team to celebrate this achievement and allow us to recognize your many contributions.
Two receptions will be held, with refreshments and prizes. Please come to one (or both if you can).
Wed, Nov 24 Abby B121 2:30–4:30 pm
and
Thurs, Nov 25 Chilliwack Yale Campus Agricultural Building B114/115 3–4:30 pm
I look forward to thanking each of you personally.
On behalf of UFV’s administrative team, Mark Evered President & Vice-Chancellor

Network Operating System migration
The Network Operating System migration project is proceeding on schedule. As a part of this process, some modifications will be made to workstations. This will occur over the next two or three weeks and will include a one-time automatic restart of your workstation. If you experience any issues after this change, please contact the help desk at local 4610. Your GroupWise mailbox will be migrated to Outlook in the coming months. You can ensure smooth migration of your personal data and reduce the overall migration effort by deleting un-required email from your GroupWise archive and other folders. For more information about the Network Operating System project, please visit http://www.ufv.ca/MarCom/Links.htm __________________________________________________________
Severe weather protocols
It's the time of year when we could all use a refresher on criteria for decision making and procedures that UFV uses to decide whether to open or close during times of severe weather.
The following link outlines the procedure and decision-making process: http://www.ufv.ca/About_UFV/severe_weather.htm
Neither students nor employees will be required to travel if they genuinely believe it is unsafe for them to do so. Both will use their own discretion in making these judgments.

Geography Speaker Series
The Geography department Discoveries Speaker Series presents:
Dr. Brent Ward, Simon Fraser University “Glaciation of the Northern Cordillera Over the Last 200 Ka”
Thurs, Nov 25 1–2 pm Abby A413
The northern Cordilleran Ice Sheet has repeatedly affected Yukon Territory. This ice complex produced three irregular, digitate, horseshoe-shaped glacial limits on the plateau area of central Yukon that were thought to be synchronous. However, the penultimate “Reid” glaciation actually represents two separate glaciations. Cosmogenic 10Be ages on boulders of 54-51 ka on penultimate drift in western Yukon Territory confirm that Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 4 (early Wisconsinan) glaciation was extensive in parts of Yukon Territory.
These results are in contrast to the MIS 6 (Illinoian age) of the penultimate Reid glaciation to the east in central Yukon, recently confirmed by the presence of Old Crow tephra (124 ka). This dichotomy for at least two of the source areas for the northern portion of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet, indicate different glaciological responses to climatic forcing during glaciations. At sections exposed at the penultimate limit along White River in SW Yukon MIS 4 has an almost identical extent to an older, likely MIS 6 glaciation.
Brent Ward is a Quaternary Geologist in the Earth Sciences department at SFU. He received his BSc and PhD from the University of Alberta. Brent spent three years in Ottawa with the Geological Survey of Canada, mapping in the NWT. In Prince George he studied landslides and slope stability mapping for the Ministry of Forests. He has been at SFU since 1997. Most of his research is in the Canadian Cordillera and focused on resolving glacial history and associated paleoenvironmental reconstructions.
Please forward to students and colleagues.

Sports
UFV Cascades weekend recap UFV’s men's and women's basketball programs travelled to Vancouver over the weekend and while they played well and all four games were very entertaining, they did lose twice each to their UBC Thunderbird hosts.
Both teams currently sit at 2-6 in Canada West play with four games remaining before the holiday break. The Cascades will face Thompson Rivers, at home in the Envision Athletic Centre this coming weekend and their final two pre-holiday games are in Langley, against arch rival TWU on December 3-4. Women UBC 60-UFV 49 (Fri) UBC 72-UFV 47 (Sat) The Cascades played a great game on Friday going into the final quarter they were down by three-points, but an 8-0 run by UBC in the fourth quarter sent UFV to their fifth loss. Saturday was the same story a great first half but the third quarter hurt as the Cascades were held to twp-points the entire third frame. Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba led the way with 24-weekend points. Men UBC 84-UFV 68 (Fri) UBC 96-UFV 82 (Sat) The men's basketball team gave UBC the defending CIS Silver medallists, a good run in both games, but on Friday night the second and fourth quarters did UFV in, on Saturday UBC jumped out to a double digit lead and while UFV fought back all night, they just could not recover from the early deficit. Joel Friesen led the Cascades with 21-points on Friday and Zeon Gray led UFV with 26-points on Sat. __________________________________________________________
