Wed — First Salmon ceremony

Please join us on the Chilliwack campus for the First Salmon Ceremony tomorrow, April 20. Here is a brief explanation of the importance of this event.

Stó:lō elder Ed Leon of Chehalis explained about the ceremony in “You are asked to witness”: an Indian doctor had a dream that the creator was sending them something up the Fraser River and told them to go to the river and scoop them out. It was salmon.

They were told to respect the salmon and thank the ones that sent them. The salmon people sent their children to give you better energy. Take the bones of the first salmon you have eaten back to the river. You do that as a sign of respect and they will send you their children every year. That is the Stó:lō way. It is done by the Chief and the whole village is included in the ceremony.

Empty Bowls dinner

Thanks to all the wonderful folks who came out and made a bowl. And while it’s great to make a bowl, we want to sell this dinner out. Please come and purchase your tickets at the front desk, or contact Martin at Martin.Kelly@ufv.ca .

The soup this year will be courtesy of our very own chef training program and if you’ve never had their soup, it is to die for. If you wish to support the effort but can’t make the dinner itself, you (or your group) can buy a ticket/s which we will make sure gets into the hands of a student who would otherwise not be able to afford it.

Topic: Negotiating Class, Caste and Gender in Rural India

Indian society is highly structured by informal institutions of class, caste and gender. They can often present barriers that constrain an outsider's access to resources, knowledge and information if they are not familiar with negotiating this invisible obstacle course. Garry will describe his cross-cultural communication strategies, successes and failures while researching rural livelihoods in central India over the past seven years.
