Events
Today — FSA forum on university governance
Speakers: Wayne Peters, VP CAUT and Elizabeth Hodgson, UBC
The issue of university governance has bedeviled CAUT for many years. There has been general consensus about the key principle; namely, that academic staff must play a decisive role in making educational decisions and setting educational policy if post-secondary institutions are to fulfill their purposes.
The bedeviling question has been how to make that principle work. CAUT’s long-held answer is through a bicameral system of governance with a board of governors responsible for financial and administrative matters and a senate (with a strong majority of academic staff) responsible for educational matters. The problem is that senates have consistently disappointed.
Wed, Dec 8 2–4 pm Abby B121
This presentation will examine CAUT history on matters of university governance, and proposes ways to ensure the academic voice is maintained in our institutions.
Wayne Peters is associate professor in UPEI’s Engineering department in Charlottetown, PEI where he has taught for 15 years. He is past president of the UPEI Faculty Association, having served as its president for four years — and vice-president of the CAUT, where his activity spans the past seven years.
Elizabeth Hodgson is associate professor in UBC’s English department and past president of the UBC Faculty Association.
Everyone is welcome
We hope to see you there!
For more information, please contact Tanja in the FSA office at local 4530.

Weekend wrap up
UFV’s basketball programs travelled down Highway 1 to Langley last weekend to face their arch rival Trinity Western Spartans. The women's team swept TWU 68-65 on Friday and 67-56 on Saturday to improve their Canada West regular season record to 6-6 and move into eighth place. The Cascades have a three-win lead over the University of Calgary Dinos. At Friday’s game, fifth year veteran Alyssa Gaukel, was the star as she scored six of the team’s final eight points as they came back to win by three points. Trailing almost all night the Kinesiology major hit a key three-point basket to push UFV ahead by one and then hit three free throws to help clinch the victory.
On Saturday, the Cascades were again the "comeback kids" except it started in the second half (not the last three minutes of the game) with Alexa McCarthy, putting on an offensive clinic and leading the team to victory with 16-points. The men’s team fell to 4-8 in Canada West regular season play, the Cascades currently sit in a three-way tie for the 8th and final playoff berth, but have two more losses than University of Calgary Dinos and Brandon University Bobcats.
The Cascades fell to TWU 92-73, on Friday, and 114-89 on Saturday. Ryan Fahandeg, led the Cascades with 21 points on Friday and Sam Freeman, with 32 points on Saturday. There will be several exhibition games and tournaments over the holiday break, but the nine varsity teams are now on an official holiday and exam break until the first weekend in January.

Cascades golf team ranks sixth in poll UFV’s men’s golf program has been ranked sixth in the inaugural golf coaches’ poll, released today by the Golf Coaches Association of Canada. The Cascades enjoyed a very successful fall that saw the program win the BCCAA and CCAA silver medals. Head coach Chris Bertram was named BCCAA Coach of the Year and fourth-year General Studies major Mitch Lock was named BCCAA male golfer of the year. The Cascades will be able to put their top ten ranking to the test the next spring at the Golf Canada University Championships at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club, in Ontario. “This is the first time there has been a National Coaching Poll in university golf, and while I might be inclined to think our record warrants a bit more respect, we have to be happy nonetheless to see UFV ranked so highly among the elite programs in the country,” says Bertram. Top Ten Rankings: Laval Humber UBC Victoria Waterloo UFV Western Montréal Manitoba Queen's For further information on the Golf Canada University Championships visit http://www.golfcanada.ca/

The team finished the Canada West regular season with an 8-5-1 record and advanced to the CIS Championship tournament by defeating Trinity Western University and UBC to capture the Canada West title. In Charlottetown, the Cascades became the school's first team to win a national tournament match, defeating Laval University, 2-0, in the CIS quarterfinal.
