UFV annual writing prize competition: call for papers from all disciplines **deadline extension**
Do you and the members of your department want to celebrate and showcase some of the fine papers written by students in your area? You have a few more days to do so by way of UFV's Writing Prize competition, as the deadline for submissions has been extended to Wed, May 19.
To qualify for the competition, papers must have been written in the Summer 2009, Fall 2009, or Winter 2010 semesters in response to UFV course-based assignments. Prize categories are based on the work that is submitted and change somewhat each year. If you encounter writing which you feel is worthy of recognition, please encourage your students to enter their work.
Guidelines for submission are available at http://www.ufv.ca/Writing_Centre/UFV_Writing_Prize_Competition/Guidelines_for_Submission.htm
Papers should be forwarded (by email, inter-campus mail, or in person) to the Writing Centre on the Abbotsford campus by the new deadline of Wed, May 19, 2010.

UFV’s second Microlecture series
Would you invest two minutes of your time if it meant greater recognition for your research work and the possibility of inspiring someone to study in your field? Share your research with the university and regional community in a fast and user-friendly way. Given the success of our first two-minute 'Microlecture' event, we are planning our second event where all faculty members involved in any form of research have the opportunity to disseminate the highlights of their findings, one after the other, to the masses in busy, public places on campus. We're looking for ten or more faculty members to be a part of our second UFV Microlecture event, slated for the Abbotsford campus in September 2010 from 11:30 am to 2 pm (location TBA). You’ll be amongst your peers at universities around the world who make their research accessible through this process. A small riser and microphone/speakers will be set up. Each researcher takes the stage for a maximum of two minutes and speaks about the exciting findings and implications of their research. Each researcher will take the stage, one after the other, over the course of about an hour. Discussion and networking are encouraged afterwards (e.g. if someone is inspired, they would approach you afterwards to discuss further). The event is widely promoted across campus and into our local communities.
What it is not: The Microlecture series is not an opportunity for faculty to introduce themselves or their department to the audience. Rather, it is an opportunity for those in attendance to get a variety of “snapshots” of the exciting research being conducted at UFV. Take a look at the January event: http://stream.ufv.ca/OnDemand/marcom/Microlectures.wmv
Interested? Please contact Irwin Cohen, Rita Dhamoon, or Brad Whittaker to learn more. We hope to have at least ONE representative from each department participate in this exciting event. To register, please contact Yvette Boutin at yvette.boutin@ufv.ca by May 30 2010. We will send out reminders before the deadline, and then again at the end of August for those who were interested.
__________________________________________________________ University lecture series 2010/11
UFV will be hosting its second University Lecture Series next year.
The purpose of the series is to profile UFV researchers and their research. The presentations should be suitable as public lectures, directed towards both the UFV community and the external community. The lectures should be topical and innovative, and of interest to a general audience. These lectures also provide opportunities to make linkages between research and teaching. Note the research must be based at UFV.
UFV Faculty are asked to nominate their colleagues or themselves using the form located on the Research office website: http://www.ufv.ca/Research/Research_News_and_Events/lectureseries.htm
Nominations and applications can be for individuals or a panel.
Information requested includes a list of recent publications, research projects, and presentations for each applicant. If you are proposing a multi-person lecture or a panel on one topic (perhaps a joint research initiative), please explain this, and you can submit one form. In this instance, please remember to attach separate lists of recent publications, research projects, and presentations. This call is for four lectures which will be from September 2010 to April 2011.
For more information you can contact Yvette Boutin at yvette.boutin@ufv.ca. Applications and nominations should be submitted to Yvette by the deadline of May 31, 2010.
