UFV eNews
March 2010
The UFV eNews is a quick and convenient way for you to keep up with the latest news and events from the University of the Fraser Valley.
Well, now that we don’t have to pretend it’s winter any more for the sake of the Olympics, we can welcome spring with a vengeance at UFV. It’s crunch month for students, as they work on term papers and midterms, and prepare for finals in April. Then many of them will be looking for summer work or for their first career posting. See http://www.ufv.ca/Jobs.htm if you’d like to hire them.

Mar 10: Plecas to lecture on crime-reduction model
Unless you’re one of those people who profits from an illegal lifestyle, you probably agree that crime reduction is a noble goal. But did you know that it’s also the name given to a formal strategy to achieve that goal in British Columbia?
Numerous communities are trying out the “crime-reduction” model, an approach imported from Britain that sees stakeholder groups working closely together to target habitual and persistent criminals. The idea isn’t to simply get them off the streets and throw them in jail in an “in-and-out” cycle, but to help them gain access to the resources they need to address the underlying cause of their crime, such as addiction, poverty, mental illness, or lack of education.
Dr. Darryl Plecas, of the UFV School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, will be speaking about the crime-reduction model on Wed, March 10, as part of the UFV lecture series. This free public event will be held at 7 pm in the lecture theatre (B101) by the Abbotsford campus cafeteria.

Mar 9: UFV info nights help students explore Social Work careers and opportunities
Sometimes a person may know what type of career they want, but they don’t know how to get there. That’s often the case when people research the field of social work and human services. They know they want to help people, and feel they have the skills to make a difference in somebody’s life.
To help potential students find the right path, UFV’s School of Social Work and Human Services is organizing an information session where people can learn about the many program options and educational opportunities available in this field at UFV.
The session, which takes place Tuesday, March 9, in Abbotsford, are open to students graduating high school or anybody who is looking for a career change, hoping to upgrade current skills, or wanting to take their life in a totally new direction.

Mar 10–28: Magical “dream” returns to UFV Theatre stage
William Shakespeare’s magical romantic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream returns to the UFV stage March 10 to 28. This will be the third version of Dream presented to Fraser Valley audiences by the department. This new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be directed by Theatre department head Ian Fenwick.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a fragrant potpourri of love, laughter, and enchantment that explores the ridiculous and arbitrary nature of romantic infatuation. It is a true comedic classic, in which fairy and mortal worlds collide with hilarious consequences and it is the perfect initiation into Shakespeare’s work for anyone who perhaps feels — mistakenly — that the Bard’s plays are too highbrow and elitist for a modern audience.
Opens Friday, March 12 in the theatre on the Chilliwack campus of UFV and runs to March 28. For tickets and information call: 604-795-2814 or email:
Theatre@ufv.ca .

Summer job in Uganda earns UFV student credit towards her degree
Abbotsford’s Victoria Harris has the best summer job.
Harris, who is currently in her third year of studies at the University of the Fraser Valley, has a returning gig each summer with Give International — an Ontario-based non-governmental organization that hires and place volunteers in several African nations. Each summer, she travels to Uganda, where she works as a volunteer coordinator in the city of Jinja.
Her job is to meet fresh-faced volunteers at the airport, set them up with accommodation, help familiarize them with local jargon and currency, and introduce them to other expats. Basically, she’s there to make new volunteers feel at home and to help stave off feelings of isolation or of being overwhelmed.

UFV alumna keeps hearts happy with her thriving business
Do yourself a favour. If you think you don’t have time to exercise, or you don’t have time to finish that degree, don’t tell UFV graduate Pamela St. Amour.
Pamela will set you straight. There is always time, she says, to do the things you want to do, especially when it comes to physical fitness and a higher education. That’s her mantra and Pamela is living proof that goals are achievable, no matter how high the climb.

Mar 9: International Day for the Elimination of Racism
Please join us in commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Racism, a bit earlier than the official day on March 21. On that day in 1960, police in Sharpeville, South Africa opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid 'pass laws'. Proclaiming the day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
UFV joins communities around the world in working towards eliminating racism. This year's theme is Race and Entertainment. Highlights of the evening include art displays and the review of a number of video clips with discussion about race and entertainment.

Mar 15: 2010 Olympics sport nutrition consultant/dietitian Nanci Guest to speak on nutritional strategies for training and competition
When elite athletes gather for competition, the margin between victory and defeat is small. Attention to detail can make that vital difference. Diet affects performance, and the nutritional strategies followed in training and competition will affect the success of training and therefore competitive success. Diet may have its biggest impact on training, and a nutrient-rich, well-balanced diet will help support consistent intensive training without the athlete succumbing to illness or injury, in addition to supporting adaptations to the training stimulus. As a sport dietician often my message is simple — every day you have the power to perform better by eating better. Nanci Guest will discuss some tips for that nutritional edge, as well as the effectiveness of popular supplements for performance and/or strength gains.

Mar 17: The Mediated Horse Race —
Towards a theory of poll-reporting during elections
The media's coverage of elections is dominated by horserace journalism that focuses on opinion polls rather than on the real issues. Yet, in spite of this dominance, we know little about what drives the media's treatment of the polls. This paper proposes a theory of poll reporting during elections, using data collected during the 2006 Canadian federal election.
Speaker J. Scott Matthews is an assistant professor in the Political Studies department at Queen's University.
