UFV delivers best public university teaching in BC,
says Globe and Mail survey
Everyone likes to bring home a good report card, and UFV is no exception. The day before formally installing new President and Vice-Chancellor Mark Evered, UFV received top marks in the Globe and Mail’s annual Canadian University Report. The report is based on surveys of undergraduate students at universities of all sizes across Canada.
UFV earned the most As and A+s of any public university in the province.
UFV was at the top of the list in the small universities category (4,000 to 12,000 students), earning an A grade in the following areas: most satisfied students, quality of education, and teaching. It also earned an A+ in student-faculty interaction (the only A+ given to any public university of UFV’s size or larger in this category nationally), and an A+ in class size. UFV’s A grade for teaching was the top score for any public university of any size in BC. In the most satisfied students category, UFV tied with Vancouver Island University for top spot among public universities in BC in all size categories.

UFV first university in Canada to go virtual with presidential ceremony
You were invited, but asked to consider not attending…at least not in person.
When UFV installed its fifth president and second vice-chancellor Oct 23, it was the first in Canada to do so ‘virtually’. Dr. Mark Evered was officially installed in the university’s performance theatre in Chilliwack. The intimate ceremony was webcast live across campuses, across the country, and internationally.
UFV considered the current state of the economy and
UFV’s commitment to be a ‘green’ university, and made the decision to web-stream the ceremony.

UFV dental students team up with hockey’s Bruiser to protect teeth
If mascots could talk, Bruiser — the chief cheerleader for the Chilliwack Bruins hockey squad — would fill your ears with stories about the importance of wearing a protective mouth guard while on the ice.
Bruiser visited the UFV dental clinic last week and, along with a dental check up, was fitted for a custom-made sports mouth guard. He was a guest of the senior Dental Hygiene students, who are teaming up with the Bruins to discuss safety, protective mouth guards, and easy ways to promote healthy teeth and gums.

UFV Cascades claim another BCCAA golf championshipThey needed to overcome a nine-shot deficit heading into the years final tournament, and a five-shot deficit entering the final round to claim their second-straight British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) golf championship. For the talented members of the UFV Cascades golf team, that was no problem.
The University of the Fraser Valley has claimed back-to-back BCCAA golf titles after winning the final tournament of the year, hosted by UBC-Okanagan over the weekend at two Kelowna courses. UFV finished the weekend with a two-round total of 571, 11 shots ahead of Camosun and 15 better than UBC-Okanagan.

UFV presents speaker on governance challenges to addressing climate change
Thurs, Nov 12
2:30 to 4:30 pm
Room B163 on the Abbotsford campus.
Presented by the Philosophy and Political Science department.Global warming is a serious threat to our environment, and governments from around the globe have agreed that action needs to be taken to address it. Canada promised the international community that it would reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to 6 percent below 1990 levels by 2012, yet our current emissions stand well above 30 percent of that target. What’s stopping us from achieving this goal in a timely manner?
A special guest speaker will address that question in a presentation at UFV on Thursday, Nov 12. Dr. Sima Joshi-Koop is a research associate from the political science department at Simon Fraser University, and she’s coming to UFV as the guest of the philosophy and politics department.
