Admissions updates
Bachelor of Kinesiology closed for Fall 2010
The Bachelor of Kinesiology is no longer accepting applications for Fall 2010, however, a winter intake (January 2011) is planned. Students still interested in Kinesiology at UFV can continue to apply for the program pathway Kinesiology Studies for Fall 2010, and as of August 1, 2010 they can apply to the Bachelor of Kinesiology for Winter 2011.
Applications for Fall 2010
Most programs are still accepting applications for Fall 2010 at this time. A continuously updated list of available programs can be found at www.ufv.ca/ar/admissions/acceptapps. We encourage students to apply as soon as possible as many programs are reaching capacity for the Fall 2010 intake period.
Grade 12 Interim grade submission in March
Students who require interim grades for program admission were sent a handout in February outlining how to submit their interim grades to UFV. You can download and print the instructions from www.ufv.ca/Assets/Admissions+and+Records/Admissions/self-report-manual.pdf .
UFV provides an online self-reporting grade system which is the preferred method of grade submission for students attending BC schools. There is online help for students within the self-reporting system, and the handout gives students some suggestions for determining interim grades for courses in progress during the second semester.
Students taking AP or IB courses should report the grades as the regular grade 12 course in that discipline. For example, IB History would be reported as History 12. If they are taking a course in a subject that is not included, or more than one course in a discipline, they can submit the grade manually.
Students can submit grades on more than one occasion, but they cannot change a grade that has been submitted. If they need to correct a grade, they must submit a manual interim grade and a note of explanation to Admissions. This can be mailed in or dropped off at any Admissions office at UFV.
Students must submit all the grades and/or test scores for their programs by March 31, 2010 in order to retain their original application date. The self-reporting system will close after March 31.
Grade reporting for BSc grade 11 early application
Students who have applied for the Bachelor of Science program through the early application option are asked to report their grades through an online survey tool available at myUFV. Grade 11 students should not use the Grade 12 Self-Reporting system. Students with questions about the BSc Grade 11 Early application program should contact science.advice@ufv.ca
Mathematics Curriculum changes reminder
UFV is aware that Math curriculum changes are coming; in response we have formed a task force that is working to align UFV high school pre-requisites with the new math streams. We aim to have pre-requisites established by late spring. Please be aware that the “Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics” will be suitable for most Trades programs at UFV, with the possible exception of Electrical, Drafting, and Agriculture programs. We are currently assessing which level of math will be appropriate in these cases. We recommend that all other grade 9 students who may want to apply to any other program at UFV choose the “Foundations Mathematics” stream if that is suitable to their level.

March 5 – UFV Health Sciences students present health fair at Cottonwood Mall
Get ready to find out more about how to stay healthy, from teeth to toes, at a health fair presented by University of the Fraser Valley students on Friday, March 5. Students from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Certified Dental Assistant, and Dental Hygiene programs have been hard at work on informative displays that they’ll be on hand to share at the Cottonwood Mall in Chilliwack.
Some of the topics covered by the displays include the effect of soft drinks on teeth, “meth mouth” (damage inflicted by methamphetamine use), hypertension, diabetes, prevention of falls, oral self-care for babies, smoking cessation, bowel health, tooth sensitivity, tooth whitening, risk factors for dental decay, and how oral health affects overall health.
The health fair will run all day from 9:30 am to 9 pm in the mall.
Students will be available to answer questions and provide information to the public.

March 8 & 9 – Info nights help students explore Social Work careers, opportunities
Sometimes a person may know what type of career they want, but they don’t know how to get there. That’s often the case when people research the field of social work and human services. They know they want to help people, and feel they have the skills to make a difference in somebody’s life. But do they need a degree or a diploma for the job that interests them?
The University of the Fraser Valley’s School of Social Work and Human Services knows that finding the most direct educational route can sometimes be difficult. To help potential students find the right path, UFV is organizing two information sessions where people can learn about the many program options and educational opportunities available in this field at UFV.
The sessions, which take place Monday, March 8, at the Chilliwack campus, and Tuesday, March 9, in Abbotsford, are open to students graduating high school or anybody who is looking for a career change, hoping to upgrade current skills, or wanting to take their life in a totally new direction.
John Hogg, acting director of the School of Social Work and Human Services, says the info sessions are great opportunities for people to come to the university and speak with faculty, staff, and even students, and recent graduates to find out about the programs at UFV and potential careers.
“This is an excellent chance for people to come and learn more about our exciting and challenging programs,” Hogg says. “There are a large number of careers available once you have a background in this field, and these info sessions can open some doors for people.”
Hogg also notes the spectrum of educational and career opportunities is huge because of the number of programs and options provided by the university. UFV delivers a social work degree, a social services diploma with a general or First Nations option, a certificate program in substance abuse counselling, a social work degree with a child welfare specialization, a community support worker certificate, a First Nations extended studies certificate, and the lower mainland’s only Aboriginal culture and language support diploma.
“These information sessions will give prospective students an opportunity to see what we’re all about,” Hogg says. “We’d like them to come and visit our campuses and take that first step towards achieving their career goal. Whether that goal is becoming a community support worker, a substance abuse counsellor, or something within the social work field, there is a full range of opportunities.”
Those who attend the information sessions will also learn the nuts and bolts of becoming a student, such as the registration process, the prerequisites required, tuition fees, and application deadlines. UFV faculty, staff, current students, and some graduates will be on hand both evenings to answer questions and point out the many options provided by the School of Social Work and Human Services.
To find out more about UFV’s degree, certificate, and diploma programs delivered by the School of Social Work and Human Services, you can attend either one of the evening information sessions; Chilliwack campus, room D234, on Monday, March 8 (6:30-8:30 pm), or the Abbotsford campus, room B161, on Tuesday, March 9 (6:30-8:30 pm).
Registration is not required, but you can sign up in advance if you choose, or get more details about the event by calling 604-702-2623 or 604-854-7441 local 4279. You can also email carol.oddy@ufv.ca or check out the website at www.ufv.ca/swhs .

March 9 – International Day for the Elimination of Racism
Please join us in commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Racism, a bit earlier than the official day on Sun, March 21. On that day in 1960, police in Sharpeville, South Africa opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid 'pass laws'. Proclaiming the day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
UFV joins communities around the world in working towards eliminating racism. This year’s theme is Race and Entertainment. Highlights of the evening include art displays and the review of a number of video clips with discussion about race and entertainment.
Tues, March 9
7-9 pm
Abbotsford campus, room B121 (lecture theatre)

March 10 – Dr. Darryl Plecas to lecture on crime-reduction model
Unless you’re one of those people who profits from an illegal lifestyle, you probably agree that crime reduction is a noble goal. But did you know that it’s also the name given to a formal strategy to achieve that goal in British Columbia?
Numerous communities are trying out the “crime-reduction” model, an approach imported from Britain that sees stakeholder groups working closely together to target habitual and persistent criminals. The idea isn’t to simply get them off the streets and throw them in jail in an “in-and-out” cycle, but to help them gain access to the resources they need to address the underlying cause of their crime, such as addiction, poverty, mental illness, or lack of education.
Dr. Darryl Plecas, of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of the Fraser Valley, will be speaking about the crime-reduction model on as part of the UFV lecture series.
Wed, March 10
7 pm
Abbotsford campus, room B101 (lecture theatre)
Free public event

Each summer, she travels to Uganda, where she works as a volunteer coordinator in the city of Jinja.
