Admissions updates

All programs are still accepting applications!

It is not too late to encourage students to apply to UFV, as all programs with Fall intakes for 2010 are still accepting applications. You can check online whether programs are still accepting applications later on in the application period .

BSc Grade 11 Early application available until January 31
UFV will offer guaranteed admission for Fall 2011 for up to sixty Grade 11 applicants, provided they meet the entrance requirements in Grade 12. This is an exciting opportunity for Grade 11 science students to receive personal advising from UFV, meet other students in the same group, and participate in activities such as our science fair.

Grade 11 applicants can apply through PASBC, choosing BSc Grade 11 Early application option. Students are encouraged to apply early as applications will close once we receive sixty applications, or by January 31, 2010, whichever is earlier.

For more information about this option, check the UFV Science Faculty page at and click on the Grade 11 entry link, or you can contact Karen Cooper, UFV science advisor at 604-854-4079, toll-free at 1-888-504-7441 local 4079, or email scienceadvice@ufv.ca .

Reminder – new entrance requirements for Bachelor of Business Administration and Business Administration diploma
Grade 12 applicants may now apply to enter the Bachelor of Business Administration degree directly. The entrance requirements for the BBA are:

  • BC High school graduation or equivalent
  • Principles of Math 12, with a minimum grade of C+
  • The prerequisites for ENGL 105 (may be met by English 12 with a C+, a CPT of 48, LPI of 30, TOEFL iBT of 88, etc)
  • One additional provincially examinable grade 12 course, with a minimum grade of B

The entrance requirements for the Business administration diploma have been changed to:

  • BC High school graduation or equivalent
  • Principles of Math 11 or 12 with a minimum grade of C
  • English 12 with a minimum of C+, or one of the prerequisites for ENGL 105

Students who apply for the BBA but do not meet the entrance requirements will automatically be considered for admission to the Business Administration diploma.

Optional Provincial exams are not required at UFV
UFV does not require optional provincial exams for grade 12 courses used for entrance requirements or course prerequisites. When a provincial exam is written (whether it is optional or mandatory for the student) UFV will use the higher of the school mark or the blended grade for entrance requirements or course prerequisites.
Students must write the provincial examinations for those subjects where examinations are mandatory in order to meet BC Graduation Program requirements, however, the higher of the school mark or the blended grade will be used for admission or course prerequisites.

Public invited to tour UFV Aircraft Structures Training Centre Dec 2

If you love airplanes -- and not just flying in them -- UFV is looking for you. The university is opening its aircraft structures training hangar at the Abbotsford International Airport on Wednesday, December 2 to the general public for an afternoon of checking out planes, helicopters, and the equipment used to keep them in the air.

The facility, located at 30645 Firecat Ave., welcomes dozens of students each year as part of UFV’s 10-month-long Aircraft Structures Technician program (the next intake is slated for February 2010). Trained structures technicians repair and overhaul aircraft, manufacturing, modifying, and repairing sheet metal parts, structures, skins, and panels.  They work with airlines, aircraft manufacturers, fixed-base operations, large repair and overhaul organizations, and specialty repair shops.

The public is welcome to come see what it’s all about at the Dec 2 open house from 4-8 pm. Visitors can explore the training facility, see aircraft under restoration (Lockheed Lodestar, Boeing 737-200, Sikorsky Sea Hawk, and Piaggio P149D), get hands-on and rivet an airplane-shaped keychain (first 50 visitors only), and check out a rocket used in the film Night at the Museum -- Battle of the Smithsonian.

UFV is welcoming applicants for the program, which begins February 1, 2010 -- just in time for Grade 12 grads finishing a semester early, or mid-career folks looking for a new direction. Recent developments mean that applicants may be eligible for financial assistance through EI, including living expenses, child care, commuting/travel costs, tuition, and living-away-from-home costs.  Applications will be accepted onsite at the open house event.

Aircraft Structures is a high-tech trade in a clean, climate-controlled environment. There’s no prior experience required and it’s ideal for both men and women. The UFV Aircraft Structures certificate is Transport Canada approved, which means that it is recognized throughout Canada. Graduates are qualified to start as structures apprentices and eventually become "S"-licensed aircraft structures technicians.

Call 1-888-504-7441 local 5402 or email aerospace@ufv.ca for details.

UFV introduces new specialty agriculture certificates

This fall, UFV launched four new certificate programs. Students can now study part-time to learn about berry production, field vegetable production, integrated pest management, or current agricultural practices. These certificates consist of key courses from either the livestock or horticulture programs and can be earned over two semesters while the students attend part-time.

With berry farms now a popular and lucrative venture in the Fraser Valley, there has been a request for short-term programs like the new Berry Production and Integrated Pest Management certificates. The Current Agriculture Practices certificate is designed for people who might be new to Canada and want to learn more about Canadian farming practices and British Columbian growing techniques and trends.

UFV also re-examined its milker training program — on hold for the past few years — and in January will offer the first intake for its newly revised 13-week Milker Technician certificate. Along with two on-farm practica, Milker Technician students will also learn dairy production and management, ruminant animal health, forage crop production, farm and equipment safety, soils and pest management.

Students in the new Milker Technician certificate will be taking the same classes as students in the other livestock programs, and if they choose, they can ladder their education directly into the one-year certificate or the two-year diploma program.

UFV has 11 fully trained agriculture instructors who not only teach, but also work in the livestock and horticulture industry. Along with two veterinarians, UFV’s agriculture instructors include greenhouse and nursery growers, a beef producer, a soil scientist, pest management and industry consultants, and an employee with Farm Credit Canada.

To find out more about the Milker Technician certificate, the four Essentials certificate programs, or UFV’s other horticulture and livestock programs, please visit www.ufv.ca/agriculture or call 1-888-504-7441, local 2813, or 604-795-2813.

All courses are taught on the Chilliwack campus and the next intake is January 2010.
