Fine Arts degree grads exhibit works at UFV starting Apr 24
Last fall, UFV opened a new building wing dedicated to the instruction and study of visual arts. This spring, some of the first students to experience that customized creative space are graduating with from the university’s Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program. To mark the occasion, the group is staging an exhibit of their work called Therefore.
The free show opens April 24 and will run Monday – Friday (9:30 am – 5:30 pm) until May 15 at UFV’s art gallery located in room B136 on the university’s Abbotsford campus. It will feature a variety of submissions including sculpture, painting, photography, and new media. The public is also welcome to attend the opening reception on Friday, April 24, from 5:30 to 9:30 pm in the gallery.
BFA ’09 graduate Janet Comer grew up in Maple Ridge and as a youngster was encouraged to express her creative talents by her mother, who is an oil painter. “By second grade I was convinced that becoming an artist would be my professional career path,” she says. “Despite this, I studied art in high school for only one semester. At that time, I was sure that becoming a professional artist would be next to impossible.” She attended university in Vancouver for a year, but found she lacked academic direction and then entered the work force for a few years. “I decided to return to school in hopes of earning my BFA, finally allowing myself to study what my heart had always desired,” she says. “The UFV visual arts program has fostered my creativity by helping me to master foundational art making skills as well as allowing me to pursue my other academic interests as well.”
Janet is joined by fellow graduates Raimond Aldrich Domino, Eduardo Dioses, and Anyssa of Abbotsford; and Colin Watchorn of Harrison Hot Springs.
The BFA degree is the highest official academic degree that a university can grant to undergraduate students in the discipline of visual arts. UFV also offers a Visual Arts diploma, a Bachelor of Arts degree with an extended minor or minor in visual arts, an extended studies certificate in visual arts, and a diploma in fashion design.
