New university graduate and single mom Tawney Gorrie has the education and the skills, but needed a boost of confidence and professional attire to get the job.
For the third year, the UFV Career Centre has partnered with local community businesses to give a deserving student like Tawney a career makeover. This year, Chilliwack businesses really stepped up. Cottonwood Mall donated $500 towards a professional wardrobe, and Undine’s Retreat Day Spa provided $200 in hair and makeup services.
“Many students don’t realize the importance of a professional image when looking for their first job,” says UFV Career Centre coordinator Lindsay Sasaki. “One of the biggest challenges for them is mustering the confidence they need to begin a serious job search.”
Tawney studied psychology at UFV and graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree this past December. As a single mother of two, she had limited funds to direct towards her professional image. “I feel much better prepared for my job search now,” the Langley resident confessed, after a day of pampering and polishing. “Although I am confident with who I am inside, I realize the impact of first impressions at interviews. With professional clothing to wear and hair that is more presentable, I feel ready now for any interview that comes my way. I feel like I could successfully fit into any career environment.”
The Career Makeover is about more than just outer appearances. With a new look and heightened confidence, Tawney will also have a career coaching session at the UFV Career Centre to refine her resume, cover letter, and interview skills.
The Career Centre is available to assist all UFV students and alumni on job-related matters and provide access to job postings, cooperative education opportunities, and career services. The team also works with employers to provide an online job posting board; career fairs and networking events; connections to students, co-op students, alumni, and faculty; and on-campus space for information sessions and interviews.
