Both the university president and chancellor were in attendance, and both were conferring awards on deserving recipients, but the event was decidedly less formal than the Convocation ceremonies they usually attend together.
UFV president and vice-chancellor Mark Evered was guest judge at the 8th annual classic car show at Chilliwack’s Minter Gardens on Sunday. His duty: pick his favourite vehicle. And with dozens of immaculate specimens gleaming in the summer sun, it was a tough choice. Not to mention the fact that UFV benefactor Dr. Jake Friesen had multiple cars on display, as did UFV dean Harv McCullough. No pressure.
Would it be a domestic or import? Pre- or post 1940s? Tiny micro-car or imposing land cruiser? After lingering with wife Maureen next to a vintage Norton Atlas motorcycle that holds special memories for them as a young couple expecting their first child, Evered eventually settled on a 1958 triple-blue Corvette convertible.
“With so many gorgeous cars to choose from in such a beautiful setting, I resorted to one of my most tried-and-true methods of making tough choices: consulting a student,” he said. The student in question turned out to be Emileigh Pearson, 9, from Evans Elementary in Sardis, who joined Evered for the presentation to Corvette owner Colleen Weii.
Dr. Brian Minter, UFV chancellor and owner of Minter Gardens, presented the People’s Choice award, reminding the hundreds of attendees that the day was not just about cars, but rather the special personal connections that people have with certain cars.
Students interested in learning how to restore vehicles to their original grandeur can do so in UFV’s new auto collision repair and refinishing program, offered at the Chilliwack Trades & Technology Centre.
