New year, new you, with UFV courses in Hope

Is it time for a new you? If you’re looking to improve your job
prospects, complete your high school equivalency, or qualify for a
promotion at work, the University of the Fraser Valley Hope Centre may
be able to help you.

The Hope Centre offers beginner computer courses, multi-level math
upgrading, and English from the intermediate to advanced level. Susan
Delong teaches most of the upgrading.

“Our centre acts as a launching pad for all sorts of people who are
working to improve their lives,” notes UFV Hope Centre coordinator
Hilary Kennedy. “You may be working and know that you need improved
math skills to advance in your job. Or you may want to qualify for
trades training or health sciences programs offered at UFV in
Chilliwack, or go on to other university-level studies. We can get you
started in Hope if you need to upgrade.”

Kennedy notes that even the most computer-shy person can successfully
learn about computers at UFV. Even if you’ve never touched one,
instructor Colleen Gingerich will make you comfortable at the keyboard
with the beginners’ computer class.

If you want to prepare for your GED (high school equivalency) test, the
people at the Hope Centre can help you with that too.

And if you’re a UFV student taking courses at other campuses but
living in Hope, the centre can help you as well.

“Any UFV student is welcome to use our computer lab. Prospective
students can come into the office to apply for admission even if
they’re planning to take courses in Chilliwack or Abbotsford, and
they can continue to register and complete other administrative tasks
through our office,” Kennedy notes.

A new partnership with the Fraser Cascade School District has resulted
in some university-level courses coming to Hope and Agassiz for
secondary students to take. Members of the public are welcome to take
these courses too, if there is room. The next university course in Hope
will be offered next fall.

The UFV Hope Centre is located at 1250 7th Avenue. It is closed for
Christmas holidays, but will reopen January 4. Classes start January 11.
Call 604-869-9991. The centre hours are Mon to Thurs, 12:30-4:30 pm. It
is closed on Fridays.
