Visiting MD to address med school opportunities in India
The Medical Director of Christian Medical College (CMC) in Ludhiana, India is making a pit-stop in Abbotsford to recruit prospective students. The Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at UCFV will host Dr. John Pramod, MD on May 31 for an open info session about medical school opportunities for non-resident Indian (NRI) applicants.
Demand for medical training in Canada far outstrips supply. The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) has found that Canada has just 7.1 first-year medical school openings per 100,000 people and that only 25 percent of applicants were admitted to Canadian medical schools in 2005/06. A recent study completed by Health Canada states that up to 1500 Canadians are currently studying medicine outside of North America because they cannot secure a seat at home.
Christian Medical College (www.cmcludhiana.org) is one of the oldest medical schools in India and offers instruction in the fields of medical, dental, nursing, physiotherapy, and paramedical. It is a 726-bed tertiary care hospital and is rated as one of the top 20 colleges of India. Beginning last year, CMC opened opportunities for non-resident Indian students, allowing them to return to their roots for medical school. Fifteen percent of all seats in each course are reserved for these students.
To learn more about this opportunity, plan to attend the info session at 3 pm on Thursday, May 31 in the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at UCFV (F building, room 125). Please RSVP to Satwinder Bains at satwinder.bains@ucfv.ca or tel: 604-854-4547.
