A few spots remain in UFV’s popular Science Rocks! summer camps, designed for local students in Grades 4-6 (as of Sept ’10). Each of the five different camps is structured to encourage the development of scientific problem-solving skills and to help campers learn fundamental scientific principles in a fun, hands-on way.
Camp 1: July 5-9, 2010 (at UFV’s Abbotsford campus) Water, Dirt, and Air: What do you get when you mix fungi, bacteria, worms and insects? How can one gas in the air be both good and bad for you? Why is the sky blue? This camp covers topics related to biology, chemistry, geography, and environmental science.
Camp 2: July 12-16, 2010 (at UFV’s Abbotsford campus) Puzzles, Processors, and Parts: Which part of the body consumes the most energy? What type of bug is the computer bug? What sport is played with a truncated icosahedron? This camp covers topics related to computer science, mathematics, statistics, and human movement.
Camp 3: July 19-23, 2010 (at UFV’s Abbotsford campus) Rockets, Robots, and Rollercoasters: Why do you get taller in space? What can you do to prevent yourself from sinking into quicksand? What is another name for a dirty snowball made of ice? This camp covers topics related to physics, engineering, and robotics.
Camp 4: July 26-30, 2010 (at UFV’s Abbotsford campus) Lenses, Light, and Luminescence: Which part of the body moves 100,000 times per day? How can a telescope also be a microscope? How long does it take for light to travel between Earth and Mars? This camp covers topics related to physics, astronomy, and physical geography.
Camp 5: Aug 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 2010 (at UFV’s Chilliwack campus) The very best of Science Rocks all in one camp!
Camps are limited to 30 students each and will run Monday–Friday, 8 am–5 pm. UFV Science students will provide guidance for campers as they explore intriguing scientific phenomena and participate in fun physical activities between sessions. Each individual camp costs $250 (includes all activities and supplies, lunches, t-shirt, and completion certificate). Because there is a significant physical fitness component, parents can claim camp fees under the children’s fitness tax credit.
Registration forms and additional information — as well as some great photos from last year’s camps — are available online at www.ufv.ca/sciencerocks. Send questions to sciencerocks@ufv.ca or call 604-854-4556.
