UCFV: policy changes good news for high school grads
Guaranteed admission Has the mail come yet? This question will likely be echoing through the homes of the high school grad class of 2008, as they eagerly await an acceptance letter from their university of choice. This year, many applicants to UCFV will be saved the wait, as the university has instituted a new “guaranteed admission” policy.
Grade 12 applicants who apply to UCFV by January 31, 2008, for admission to the following programs, will be guaranteed a seat for the Fall 2008 semester: Bachelor of Arts degree, Bachelor of Science degree, Bachelor of Computer Information Systems degree, Associate of Arts degree, Business Administration diploma, and the Business Marketing and Sales certificate. Applicants will receive a letter acknowledging their guaranteed admission within 2-3 weeks of applying.
Students are still required to submit interim grades in March and meet the entrance requirements for the program they select. If, for some reason, they cannot submit their interim grades, they will still have a guaranteed seat in the program path they choose at UCFV, which will allow them to register for courses and get started towards their goals.
Provincial examinations One less exam to write is always welcome news to high school students. Effective immediately, B.C. secondary school students applying to UCFV are no longer required to submit provincial exam results for exams that the provincial government deems optional.
Students will still have to write the provincial examinations for those subjects where examinations are mandatory in order to meet BC Graduation program requirements. For these courses, the higher of the school mark or the blended grade (school mark and provincial exam result combined) will be used for admission or course prerequisites at UCFV. If they choose to write an optional Grade 12 provincial exam, the higher of the school mark or the blended grade will be used for admission or course prerequisites at UCFV (details at www.ucfv.ca/ar/admissions).
UCFV is adopting the same position on this issue as the University of Victoria. SFU has delayed a decision, UBC still requires applicants to write all provincial exams, and UBC-Okanagan has not yet issued comment. UCFV encourages all those interested in applying for studies in the Fall 2008 semester to do so by January 31, 2008. Many UCFV programs will accept applications beyond that date, but programs may begin to fill. Applications for residence in Fall ’08 on the UCFV Abbotsford campus are also being accepted now (more at www.ucfv.ca/residence ).
