NSERC 2012 Strategic Project Grants Competition
The literature for the 2012 Strategic Project Grants competition is now available at http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Professors-Professeurs/RPP-PP/SPG-SPS_eng.asp.
Please note the new deadline for submission of applications – April 1, 2012.
The anticipated budget for the 2012 SPG competition is expected to result in about 12 to 15 awards per target area. Last year’s low success ratio (16.5%) was unprecedented, primarily due to the high number of applications. To better manage expectations and keep the burden on the research and peer review communities at an acceptable level, the following measures will be implemented for the 2012 competition:
- Each application will be strictly screened for fit to program and fit to target areas. http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Professors-Professeurs/RPP-PP/SPGTargetAreas-SPSDomainesCibles_eng.asp
- The applicant must specifically address this in the introduction section of the proposal.
- Applications targeting incremental improvements to existing technologies will not be considered.
- A pre-selection process will be invoked for all target areas to retain only the most promising proposals and achieve a nominal success ratio of 25% (i.e., approximately 50 to 60 applications per target area); results of the pre-selection process will be final.
Successful proposals must be strong in all seven selection criteria. Please refer to the SPG instructions http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/OnlineServices-ServicesEnLigne/Index_eng.asp to see how each criterion is evaluated.
The call for collaborative proposals under international agreements now includes the Japan Science and Technology Agency specifically for proposals in the research topics of Renewable Energy and Energy Use within the Natural Resources and Energy target area. Due to the timing of a workshop related to this new initiative, the deadline for submission of joint NSERC-JST proposals will be extended to April 15, 2012.
A reminder of some changes that were implemented last year:
- Where a government organization is a supporting organization, the letter of support accompanying Form 183A must be signed by a director general (or equivalent level)
- Major equipment requests are now limited to $150,000.

NSERC Discovery Grant
Discovery Grants Program supports ongoing programs of research (with long-term goals) rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances, whether made individually or in teams. Researchers are free to work in the mode most appropriate for the research area.
Discovery Grants Program assists in: promoting and maintaining a diversified base of high-quality research capability in the natural sciences and engineering in Canadian universities;
- fostering research excellence;
- providing a stimulating environment for research training.

PLEASE NOTE:
Multiple Grant Applications
Researchers may not apply for an Insight Grant and an Insight Development Grant within the same calendar year as applicant (principal investigator).
This means:
A researcher who applied for an Insight Development Grant in February 2011 may not apply for an Insight Grant in October 2011, whether successful in the competition or not.
A researcher who applies for an Insight Grant in October 2011 may apply for an Insight Development Grant in February 2012, provided that the objectives of the research are different.
However:
There is no limit to the number of applications on which a researcher may be listed as a co-applicant or collaborator.
If a researcher holds a grant, she or he may submit a new application to the same funding opportunity in the final year of the grant.
Please consult SSHRC’s website at http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/policies-politiques/multiple_apps-demandes_multiples-eng.aspx for more information on multiple applications.
