Open Content & Copyright

Copyright for each entry is vested with the originating author(s); but as part of the author’s agreement for publication in the encyclopedia, each author agrees to the following conditions:

  • The entry or article may be subject to editing for length, grammar, style or accuracy and each entry is published at the discretion of the encyclopedia editor(s) or editorial board, except that, if editing does not meet the author’s approval, the author may also choose not to have the edited item published.

  • Unless otherwise specified, permission is granted to any user of the encyclopedia to view, copy, print and distribute the content, subject to the following:

      1. the content is used for informational, educational and/or non-commercial purposes only;

      2. any copy or portion must include a full conventional citation as to origin;

      3. no modifications are to be made to original materials;

      4. the author reserves the right to revoke such authorization at any time, upon written notice to the user;

      5. uses for purposes other than the above will be subject to the written permission of the copyright holder prior to use.

  • All encyclopedia entries, text, visuals, or other materials, at the discretion of the Encyclopedia editors, may have embedded within them, hypertext links to related materials in the encyclopedia, or elsewhere on the World Wide Web. Entry authors will be encouraged to suggest possible links for their entries, but may choose to withdraw consent for publication if unsatisfied with what they consider to be inappropriate links embedded within the author's work.

  • The editor(s) or editorial board of the Encyclopedia will have the discretion to choose between or among articles on a particular subject -- including proposed entries received subsequent to a prior article being published on the same topic. The editor(s) will have discretion with regard to location within the encyclopedia of articles and content, and/or with regard to decisions with regard to indexing and web meta tagging.

Any author submitting media for inclusion must ensure and acknowledge in writing that any prior conditions of ownership or copyright do not preclude publication of the item(s) through the Encyclopedia of Canadian Adult Education.

Accuracy and Responsibility

Because of the open-content approach to this project, the author(s) of any particular entry will assume primary responsibility for the factual content of the published entry, and, of course, for the author's particular interpretation or representation of the subject being described.

To the extent practical, those providing editorial support for the encyclopedia project will have some role in reviewing for factual accuracy, but final responsibility for factual accuracy or interpretation and representation of events, personalities, or projects will rest with an item's author(s).

Users of the encyclopedia who dispute the facts as stated in any given entry should first contact the author and if the matter remains unresolved, may wish to contact the editors of the encyclopedia.

Entry Updating

All entries will be dated.  As part of this participatory project, we anticipate that authors of entries relating to very current or evolving topics may wish to review their entry(ies) yearly, with a view to ensuring that the information and interpretation remains current.  If it comes to the attention of the editors that an entry has become outdated, the originating author will be encourage to provide an update.  The editors of the encyclopedia will assume tacit permission to update or replace any entries which require updating, but which remain unadjusted by the originating author for a period of two years from the date of the original entry or from notification by the editors.  We encourage encyclopedia users to bring to the attention of the editors or the author, suggestions for updating.

It will be assumed that any author submitting a proposed entry has

accepted the philosophy and conditions set out above.
