Equine Studies at UFV



Equine Anatomy and Physiology
This course will give the student an introduction to the anatomy of the horse and the basic anatomical “systems” that work together to enable the equine body to function. Emphasis will be on the digestive system, musculo-skeletal system (with particular focus on the foot and leg), the respiratory system, nervous system, the reproductive system, circulatory system and common problems associated with each. This introductory course will be a prerequisite for future, more detailed courses.

Equine Nutrition
This course will explore the fundamental building blocks of equine nutrition and the relationship between feeding and horse health. We will explore the equine digestive tract and the horse’s unique ability to utilize feedstuff s that many monogastric animals cannot. Equine nutrition and its role in your horse’s health and performance will also be a key focus of this course.

Managing Equine Health
There are many physical and psychological factors that work to keep our horses healthy, from the most simple aspects (for example, adequate “turn out”, enabling the horse to move at will) to the more complex (a yearly preventive health program), and management of common health problems. The focus will be on health issues encountered in the Fraser Valley.Class discussion will include when it is necessary to call the vet and what situations the knowledgeable and diligent horse owner can manage on their own. Simple wound care will be addressed, including the basics of bandaging. Biosecurity techniques will be discussed.

Introduction to Equestrian Coaching and Instruction

Prerequisite: Equine Canada Learn to Ride program Rider 4 or equivalent. This is the first of two courses to help you prepare for the Equine Canada Instructor/Coach Evaluation. Topics include: the theory of coaching, discussion and lesson plan development using 20 common teaching subjects, and how to prepare for an Equine Canada exam.  Instructor: Maureen Walters

Equine Production and Management

 

This course covers feeding, breeding and management for horse owners. Topics include equine medical disorders, lameness, nutrition, facilities, reproduction management of both the mare and stallion, and equipment. Discussion of the different equine sectors and field trips will be included. This course is offered in cooperation with the UFV Agriculture department and may be taken for UFV credit or as a Continuing Studies course.
