Faculty and Staff campaign puts students first -- funds raised help students in need By Jennifer Chrismas
 | | Students are sometimes faced with tough choices. Eat or pay tuition? The Be a Lifesaver campaign is designed to help students with emergency bursaries. |
This past year UFV launched Be a Lifesaver, the first faculty- and staff-specific fundraising campaign. The campaign, based on a nautical life-saving theme to emphasize how crucial bursaries and other forms of aid are for students, achieved great success thanks to the commitment from the university community. These donations helped students in financial need by providing money for a student emergency fund and for a bursary. UFV staff and faculty appreciate the challenges of financing a post-secondary education, and they chose to give back to help struggling students. With the help of our campaign ambassadors — well-known employees who publicly supported the campaign — we were able to promote and educate our faculty and staff on the importance of giving back to the UFV community. Showing that employees are willing to give back financially to the university adds weight and credibility to our request for support from others outside of UFV. The Faculty and Staff campaign successfully raised $20,000 from more than 70 donors. This year we will be continuing the campaign and hope to raise $30,000 for students requiring financial assistance. Local eatery Restaurant 62 acknowledged the commitment of UFV faculty and staff by generously donating food and time for a thank-you reception at the home of UFV president Mark Evered and his wife Maureen. Melanie, the staff caterer for the event and a graduate from UFV’s Culinary Arts program, served mouthwatering hors d’oeuvres. We hope UFV alumni will also consider giving back to their university. As former students, you know all too well the cost of an education. For many of you, UFV helped lay the foundation upon which you are building your future. If you are interested in helping other students get the same wonderful experience you had, we ask that you consider making a donation to UFV.
