The Summer 2012 Semester Schedule

UFV provides a flexible summer semester, with courses offered over the full session (May–August), or as accelerated courses in early session (May–June) or late session (July–August). Early and late session courses cover the same material but are done in half the usual length of time, so they are very intense. A few courses run over different dates; you will see the dates for each course listed in the timetable of course offerings.

When choosing courses for summer semester, always check the session dates and the important registration dates for each course that you take; withdrawal deadlines, penalties, and fee payment dates may vary for each session.

At your scheduled registration time, you can register for courses in any of the three sessions, provided there are no time conflicts in your schedule.

Course load...what's realistic for summer semester?
UFV offers full session courses, which are the usual 14 weeks in length, and early and late session courses, which are each seven weeks in length. When you are considering how many courses to take for the summer semester, keep in mind that for the early and late session courses, you are completing the same amount of work in half the time it takes to complete a full semester course. This means double the amount of work per course.

For effective time management, consider the following:
  • A full session, three-credit course normally includes three hours per week of class time. Add to that six hours of out-of-class study time, and the result is 9–10 hours of study per week, per course.
  • An early or late session three-credit course normally includes six hours per week of class time. Add to that 12 hours of out-of-class study time, and the result is 18–20 hours of study per week, per course.
  • If you combine one full session course and two early session courses, you will need up to 50 hours per week during May and June, and 10 hours per week thereafter.
  • One full session course, one early session course, and one late session course will take up to 30 hours per week for the entire summer.
