Transition Year
The Transition Year initiatives are offered by Aboriginal Access Services and are designed to provide student support steeped in indigenous worldviews. The approaches taken are intended to assist indigenous learners to make meaning of their educational pursuits while equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue post-secondary educational paths.

Both programs are dependent upon the collaborative learning seminar and the academic workshops:
Collaborative learning seminar This seminar is a mandatory seminar for students engaged in the UCAP and LT2 transition year initiatives. The seminars are separate for the two programs, however they embrace a common set of principles to engage learners and promote successes.
Taught by an indigenous instructor, the seminars will focus on classroom discussion that stresses the importance of maintaining an indigenous perspective while engaged in university or college study. Students will be encouraged to participate fully in discussion by sharing their individual learning and recent classroom experiences while making connections and linking their experiences with those shared by others.
The seminar also serves to provide students with essential knowledge, information and skills needed to navigate post-secondary structures and to reconcile indigenous worldviews with their educational pursuits.
Academic workshops These workshops are mandatory for all UCAP and LT2 students. The workshops are an opportunity for students to receive tutorial support for the UCFV classes in which they are enrolled. Students will receive extra support and guidance for a number of introductory courses. The workshops are designed to help students develop the skills and strategies necessary to tackle future assignments individually. |
