2 is a UFV Aboriginal Access Services program for indigenous students entering their first year of university study. Whether you are preparing to apply to the UFV program of your choice or you have already been accepted into a program (congratulations!), LT
2 can lead you to academic success.
As an indigenous student in your first year of university, you may unknowingly face a critical juncture in your academic journey. Did you know that your success in moving toward a university degree is greatly influenced by the level of success in your first year? The LT
2 Program can help you through that critical first year. Understanding the culture of academic study, knowing expectations, and realizing academic standards of post-secondary education, as early as possible, contributes to successful journeys for determined indigenous students like you.
If you want to develop leadership skills and practices while learning to successfully navigate academic study, LT
2 is the program for you.
Mature studentsIf you have been out of school, either in the workforce or raising a family, you may need to sharpen your academic skills and/or receive support while adjusting to the demands of education. LT
2 provides you with an opportunity to study with other indigenous students.
Grade 12 graduates
The expectations of university study are founded on students being aware of their responsibility for their own learning. LT
2 can help you manage a course load while learning about the differences between high school and university study.
Leadership seminarAs an LT
2 student, you must take a leadership seminar in both the fall and winter semesters. The leadership seminars are designed and taught by indigenous instructors. Together the seminars prepare and equip you to enter existing academic programs with confidence, suitable teaching/learning skills, and motivation.
Collaborative learning seminarAs an LT
2 student, you will attend bi-weekly collaborative learning seminars wherein you will receive on-going support, guidance, and the valuable skills needed to navigate your academic journey. The seminars will assist you to aggressively pursue university education while providing opportunities to develop a sense of belonging and indigenize your learning experience at UFV.
Academic workshops
Academic workshops are mandatory for LT
2 students. They provide tutorial supports for a number of introductory courses. The workshops are designed to develop your skill and strategies for independent study.
Support services
Aboriginal Access Services provides personal and accessible individual help, orientation to campus, study space, computer labs, social and cultural gatherings, and is home to the elder in residence.
General requirements
- Aboriginal ancestry (Status, Non-status, Métis or Inuit)
- Knowledge that, with commitment, planning and support, academic programs are not as difficult as you think
- Willingness to learn with and from peers
- Willingness to commit to learning how to learn and how to succeed at the university level
- Willingness to commit 45 hours of class and study time to begin this journey in a successful way
