Anecdotally, drug and alcohol contribute to a large proportion of police calls for service; however, limited research has been conducted on this issue. This research report provides the results of a study conducted with Vancouver Police Department patrol level officers who collected data on substance-related contacts with the public. Given the dearth of information collected from Canadian students regarding participation in binge drinking, the Centre proposed a study to collect data from post-secondary students regarding their perceptions of and participation in binge drinking activities. The data was collected from 430 post-secondary students at the University of teh Fraser Valley and Simon Fraser University. The results indicated that students frequently participate in binge drinking, but that they do not necessarily understand what constitutes binge drinking. As these results have important implications for the prevention of binge drinking among post-secondary institutions, several policy recommendations were made in the conclusion of the report. This report continues to be cited in the media, resulting in numerous media interviews conducted with Dr. Irwin Cohen and Amanda McCormick. |
