 Julie Czeck and Joshua Garcia, fourth year students in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at UFV, recently completed a study with patrol officers from the Abbotsford Police Department regarding impaired driving enforcement. This timely study was conducted shortly after the introduction of the new impaired driving penalties introduced in British Columbia.

 In the summer of 2010, over 20 undergraduate students in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice completed over 400 ride alongs with Surrey RCMP constables. The first four reports from this study concern police officer activities while on the job.

The Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team is a specialized auto theft team that operates the well known Bait Car program. This report analyzed the type of auto thief caught by IMPACT practices and compared that profile to the auto thief caught by traditional law enforcement practices to determine IMPACTs effect on auto theft in BC.

Working with retired RCMP officer Craig Smith, Dr. Irwin Cohen from the BC Centre for Social Responsibility and Dr. Darryl Plecas have released an investigator's guide to Shaken Baby Syndrome. This guide outlines what Shaken Baby Syndrome is, who are the most common perpetrators, they physical and mental damage that occurs to babies and infants, the prevalence of this Syndrome, and how investigators can property identify it, interview possible suspects, and collect the necessary evidence. This report originated from the Surrey Fire Service's commitment to fire prevention and intervention programs based on evidence of what was actually happening in their community. They commissioned the Centres and the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice to analyse two decades of fire data in Surrey, British Columbia to develop evidence-based recommendations and policies. The full report contains a review of the literature on residential fires, the analysis of fire trends in Surrey, British Columbia, and a series of recommendations to assist the Surrey Fire Service in helping their communities reduce their risk for residential fire.

Since the publication of this report, new fire code legislation was introduced to require all homes, hotels, and motels in British Columbia to have functioning smoke alarms in place, something that was identified as a major problem in the report.
