Clayoquot Biosphere Immersion
Notes from the field, August 2009
The intensive six-day course is hosted at the Tofino botanical gardens field station on Vancouver Island and includes exploration and analysis of the many unique ecological systems within and around the Clayoquot Sound biosphere reserve. A number of UFV instructors and UFV science alumna Zoey Slater, BSc. ‘07 are participating in this year’s expedition, lending their expertise about the specific habitats of the area. Students use field-sampling techniques to examine the inhabitants and functioning of such diverse systems as intertidal mudflats, rocky shores, and old-growth forests. They also gain an understanding of the biological and social implications, including from a First Nations perspective, of the UNESCO designation of a biosphere reserve.
