Workplace Training in Attitudes, Skills, & Knowledge (TASK)
(Formerly ‘Exploring College & Career Options’)
This eight-month program offers students with disabilities the opportunity to gain self-management and employment skills, and to develop realistic career objectives in their chosen field while in the classroom. Students will also participate in a series of industry standard employability workshops such as WHMIS, Food Safe, SuperHost, etc. Students will learn basic computer skills, including email and Internet. In addition, students will gain on-the-job experience while on community-based work placements. The goals of the program are to provide the employability skills and experience necessary for students to find employment or gain access to further training at UCFV or elsewhere.
Entrance requirements
•  History of a disability (possible documentation: special education in high school, previous institutional living, other)
•  Successful interview with UCFV instructor to determine basic suitability for employment
•  Evidence of essential independent self-management skills (e.g., ability to access public transport safely or to make other transportation arrangements)
•  Two references supplied by applicant.
This is a full-time program which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. three-and-a-half days per week from September to early May.

Students are required to pay tuition fess, which total approximately $1850.00 for two semesters. The $1850.00 includes fees of approximately $300.00 for five employability workshops. Fees stated are for 2005/06 and subject to change for 2006/07.
Students may gain access to funds for tuition through the Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program (ABESAP). Students will also require a double 2H disk for the computer class and a printer card for the computer lab each semester.
Location
The program is offered at the UCFV Mission campus at Heritage Park Centre, in Abbotsford at the Marshall Road annex, and on the Chilliwack campus.
Program outline
The program consists of 15 modules offered over two 15-week semesters (fall and winter). Students attend classes three-and-one-half days per week.
Modules 1 to 5 are offered in the fall semester.
Modules 6 to 15 are offered in the winter semester.

Evaluations
Students must participate or show proof of knowledge in all modules and successfully complete a work experience placement in order to receive a UCFV certificate.

 

 

Literacy Tutor certificate
This 160-hour part-time certificate program is designed for volunteers or professionals who wish to develop or advance their ability to tutor literacy-level learners in college or community settings. Although the program’s main focus is on the adult literacy learner, many of the instructional techniques and theories of literacy acquisition taught within the program are also relevant to children and adolescents. Basic literacy, English as a Second Language, and learning disabilities are explored as areas of concentration within the general field of literacy practice.
Completion of the program’s first course, Introduction to Literacy Tutoring (Tutor 110) qualifies students to do volunteer tutoring at UCFV in the College and Career Preparation program (formerly ABE), the English as a Second Language program, or in Disability Resources. This course is a prerequisite to the certificate program. Completion of individual courses within the Literacy Tutor certificate program provide general studies UCFV credits; completion of the certificate program will provide 12 block transfer credits to UCFV’s Bachelor of Arts in Adult Education program.
Entrance requirements
1.  B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent, or post-secondary training in a relevant field.
2.  Good oral and written communication skills, as evidenced by letter, interview, and transcripts.
3.  Evidence of personal suitability for tutoring, including previous work or volunteer experience which demonstrates good interpersonal skills.
How to apply
1.  Attend an interview with program personnel, or attend an interactive small
group information session. Contact the CCP department head at 604-504-7441
or 604-792-0025, local 2439 at either number, to determine dates of information sessions.
2.  Complete a UCFV application for admission form and a Literacy Tutor certificate program application form. (Available at time of interview or information session.)
3.  During interview or group information session, handwrite a brief letter of application, outlining your interest in becoming a literacy tutor, and the skills and abilities you will bring to your work as a tutor. Be sure to mention your involvement in any previous work or volunteer experience related to tutoring.
4.  Mail or hand deliver application forms and transcripts documenting B.C. secondary school graduation completion or equivalent to designated program personnel.
Admission will be granted on a first-come basis to applicants who meet admissions criteria. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available in any given course, preference will be given to those willing to volunteer as tutors in UCFV literacy programs.
Credit for prior learning
Applicants to the Literacy Tutor certificate program may request transfer credit or assessment of prior learning to obtain up to six credits applicable to the certificate. For information on transfer credit and assessment of prior learning, please refer to Credit for Prior Learning.
