Workplace Training in Attitudes, Skills, & Knowledge (TASK) certificate

This eight-month program offers students with disabilities the opportunity to gain self-management and employment skills and develop realistic career objectives in their chosen field while in the classroom. Students will participate in a series of employability workshops such as WHMIS, Food Safe, and SuperHost, etc. They will learn basic computer skills, including word processing and using e-mail and internet. In addition, students gain on-the-job experience while on community-based work placements. Overall, the program will provide the employability, skills, and experience necessary for students to find employment or gain access to further training at UCFV or elsewhere.

Entrance requirements

For entry into the Workplace TASK program, students must:

• have a history of a disability (possible documentation: special education in high school, previous institutional living, other),
• complete an interview with a UCFV Workplace TASK instructor to determine suitability for the program,
• demonstrate essential independent self-management skills (e.g., ability to access public transport safely or to make other transportation arrangements), and
• provide two references.

Registration

TASK students are required to pick up a Permission to Register form from their instructor so they can register in the program.

Fees and additional costs

TASK students are required to pay tuition fees that total approximately $2200 for two semesters. The $2200 covers the cost of five employability workshops. In addition to tuition fees, classroom supplies and text will cost each student approximately $100.00 (e.g. text, copy card, computer memory stick, ring binder, paper, pen, pencil, etc).

Financial aid from Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program (ABESAP)

Students may gain access to funds for tuition through the Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program (ABESAP). Contact a TASK instructor for more information.

Dates and locations

TASK is a full-time program which runs from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm three days per week from September to late April. The program consists of fifteen modules offered over two 16-week semesters (fall and winter). Modules one to five are offered in the fall semester. Modules six to fifteen are offered in the winter semester.

TASK programs are offered at the UCFV Mission campus at Heritage Park Centre and at the UCFV Chilliwack campus.

Program outline

The program consists of 15 modules offered over two 15-week semesters (fall and winter). Students attend classes three and one-half days per week.
Modules 1 to 5 are offered in the fall semester.
Modules 6 to 15 are offered in the winter semester.
