Chemistry Courses
Updates will be coming soon to the Table of Chemistry Courses for 2011-2014 - watch for them (printable table in pdf format)
Chemistry Upper Level and 2nd Year Course Changes for Fall 2012 Due to faculty sabbaticals and other leave, several members of the Chemistry Dept will be absent for some or all of 2012/2013. This has necessitated scheduling changes to a few of our 2nd year and upper level courses, which are summarized below and on the accompanying table (link above). This page summarizes these changes, but remember that the posted A&R timetable is the official version!
Inorganic Chemistry
We are in the process of changing the format of our 3rd and 4th year Inorganic Chemistry Courses, and anticipate that this will happen by Winter 2013. Therefore two possible scenarios are given below. Basically, we are planning to separate CHEM 321(4) and 421(4) into two 3-credit lecture courses, and one 2-credit lab course. Information on this change will be posted on the Chemistry webpage (http://www.ufv.ca/Chemistry.htm).
If changes are in place by Winter 2013, then CHEM 321(4) will be offered as CHEM 321(3), which will be a lecture course. Students will be encouraged to take CHEM 325(2), our new inorganic lab course, at the same time.
Chemistry 221 – Inorganic Chemistry (4 credits) Chemistry 321 – Intermediate Inorganic Chemistry (3 credits) Chemistry 325 - Inorganic Chemistry Lab (new course) (2 credit) Instructor: Nigel Dance
These courses will both be offered in the Winter 2013 semester, similar to last year. CHEM 221 will next be offered in Fall 2013. CHEM 221 is usually a prerequisite to CHEM 321, but students wishing to take both courses in the Winter 2013 semester will be able to do so with the instructor's permission. The order of some 221 topics will be re-arranged to make this possible. CHEM 421 will probably not run this year.
If changes are NOT in place by Winter 2013, then CHEM 221 (4) and 321 (4) will both run and students will be able to take both.
Chemistry 350 – Introductory Biochemistry Lab Instructor: David Fenske
This course is usually offered in the winter semester, but last year was offered in the Fall as part of our course shuffling. This year it will also be offered in the Fall. The prerequisite is BIO 320 or CHEM 214, however students taking Bio 320 in the Fall may be able to take CHEM 350 using BIO 320 as a co-requisite with instructor's permission. Along with CHEM 214 (Organic Chemistry II), CHEM 350 is a logical choice for the Biology B.Sc. requirement for a chemistry course numbered 200 or above. Both courses are valuable for students pursuing medicine and other areas of health science, and could help prepare students for the MCAT exam.
