The Oracle Academic Initiative (OAI) Program at UCFV
In August 1999, the Computer Information Systems Department at UCFV signed an agreement with Oracle, placing us in the Oracle Academic Initiative. This program allows us to offer official Oracle certified curriculum and materials as part of our degree program credit courses.
Under the Oracle Academic Initiative, the CIS department includes official Oracle University curriculum in courses CIS 230 (Oracle SQL) and CIS 430 (Oracle database administration). This curriculum is designed to prepare students for official Oracle certifications OCA and OCP.
For additional information, students should consult Paul Rushton, (CIS 230) or Paul Franklin (CIS 430).
Oracle 10g
As of Fall 2006, we have been offering Oracle 10g courseware in some CIS courses.
Oracle Database 10g: Introduction to SQL is no longer part of OCA or OCP certification, but is extremely useful, and is still covered in CIS 230 Databases and DBMS.
Oracle 10g OCP certification now consists of two courses:
- Oracle Database 10g Administration Workshop I (OCA)
- Oracle Database 10g Administration Workshop II (OCP)
The first course and certification exam gives Oracle 10g Certified Database Associate (OCA) level. The addition of the second course and exam makes up Oracle 10g Certified Database Professional (OCP) level. Students are not required to write the certification exams.
The addition of two advanced level courses (and exams) to an OCP certification creates Oracle Certified Master (OCM) certification.

Where the Oracle 10g material is covered
CIS 230 Databases & DBMS: Oracle Database 10g: Introduction to SQL (as of Fall 2006)
CIS 430 Advanced Database Topics: Oracle Database 10g Administration Workshop I (OCA)
CIS 495 Special Topics (Database offering): Oracle Database 10g Administration Workshop II (OCP)
History
Until 2005, we were offering Introduction to Oracle 9i: SQL as part of the second year database course CIS 230, and Oracle9i Database Administration Fundamentals I as part of the fourth year advanced database topics course CIS 430.
Oracle9i Database Administration Fundamentals II (network installation, backup & recovery) was been offered as a fourth year elective advanced topics course, for those students interested in continuing towards Oracle9i OCP certification.
In previous years, we offered Oracle 8 and Oracle 8i training.
Oracle9i
Oracle 9i OCP certification consisted of four courses:
- Introduction to Oracle 9i: SQL
- Oracle9i Database Administration Fundamentals I
- Oracle9i Database Administration Fundamentals II
- Oracle9i Database Administration Performance Tuning
The first two courses and exams comprise Oracle9i Certified Database Associate (OCA) level. The addition of the second two courses and exams makes up Oracle9i Certified Professional (OCP) level.
The addition of two advanced level courses (and exams) to an OCP certification creates Oracle Certified Master (OCM) certification.
The details
- UCFV courses can include Oracle certification course materials, added into our courses as much as we deem useful (clearly we want and need to continue to teach the basic theory, but this provides superb hands-on application of theory to practice in a modern, well-known popular DBMS).
- Only students in our program can take the course or buy the Education kits (manuals)
- Each registered student must sign up with the OAI program online and then purchase a copy of the official Oracle Student Guide. Normally these are only available as part of a $2000 training package. The UCFV student cost is currently about $35-40.
- Students are given a voucher for 40% off the official certification exam for the component covered in the course.
- Students who attend classes are given a certificate at the end of the course stating that they have completed the Oracle course. Students still have to write the certification exams if they wish to gain official Oracle certification.
