The Cisco Networking Academy Program at UFV

Welcome

The Cisco Networking Academy program is a partnership between UFV, Cisco Systems, business, industry and government.  The Networking Academy curriculum incorporates a wide variety of learning methods and tools including hands-on laboratory projects, on-line curriculum content and quizzes, and a variety of simulations and tools.

Our goal is to provide our students with the tools they need to design, manage and maintain modern-day computer networks.

Background

In 1999, the CIS (Computer Information Systems) Department at UCFV signed an agreement with Cisco Systems, making us a Regional Cisco Networking Academy.  This partnership allows us to utilize the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum and materials as part of our diploma and degree program credit courses.

CISCO CCNA curriculum is included in CIS diploma courses CIS 192 and CIS 292 (or CIS 193, CIS 194, CIS 293 and CIS 294).   Students completing CIS192 and CIS 292 should be well-prepared to write the official CISCO CCNA certification exams if they wish to.  Transfer credit may be granted for students who have successfully completed the CISCO CCNA course requirements and who have CCNA certification.

Note: Students are not required to write the certification exams in order to satisfy UCFV CIS Program requirements (Certificate, Diploma or Degree).

CISCO CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional), NS (Network Security) and FWL (Fundamentals of Wireless LANs) curriculum is now included in some of our degree-level courses.

For more information, students should consult the Project Manager, CISCO Regional Academy, at cis_cisco@ucfv.ca.

History

  • CCNS Certificate Program launched in Fall 2008 (includes CCNA, CCNP1, CCNP3, FWL, NS1/NS2)
  • CCNA Exploration is piloted in Fall 2007 (within CIS 192)
  • From 2004 to Summer 2007,  our relevant courses are modeled on CCNA v3.x
  • Until 2004, we offered CCNA v2.1.4 based courses.
  • The CCNP curriculum was introduced into CIS in Fall/2003.
  • FNS v1.1 (Fundamentals of Network Security) was introduced in 2005, and transitioned to v1.2 later in 2005.
  • FWL v1.2 (Fundamentals of Wireless LANs) was introduced in 2007.

The Details

  • Effective Fall/2008, Networking Academy students will include both CIS students and CCNS students.
  • Some UFV courses include the Cisco Networking Academy course materials and objectives.  In many cases additional materials are also included in the related CIS/CCNS course.  At times, we will de-emphasize (but not exclude) some Cisco Networking Academy topics depending on current topic relavance and time availability.  This is in keeping with and maximizing course continuity and ensuring the relevant course theory while at the same time making the best use of the invaluable hands-on projects that allow students to practice learned concepts in an up-to-date networking environment.
  • Only students in our programs can take these courses and/or purchase the lab manuals.
  • Each registered student is required to sign up with the Cisco Networking Academy program and purchase a copy of the applicable course lab manual.  Normally these materials are only available as part of a $2000 industry training course.  The UFV student cost is currently about $20-35 (to cover the reproduction costs).
  • Students successfully completeing a Networking Academy course may request a voucher for a 40% price reduction of the certification exam fee.
  • Students who complete a Cisco Networking Academy course (within the CIS course) are awarded a certificate (provided by Cisco Networking Academy).
  • Writing the certification exam (external to CIS/CCNS) is required to become officially certified by Cisco Systems.
