Floral Design Certificate Program

This certificate program will offer you in-depth, comprehensive training that is designed to prepare you for direct employment in the floral industry. Along with a significant theory component, the program is practical and current in terms of course content and relevancy to the field. Emphasis is on mastering the correct mechanics and basic shapes of floral design using fresh, treated, and dried floral products. You will also learn some advanced techniques.

The program consists of six modules:

• Floral Design Basics I
• Floral Design Basics II
• Christmas Arrangements
• Special Occasion/Silk and Dried Flowers
• Sympathy and Church Flowers
• Wedding Flowers

Each of the six modules are 10 sessions- two evening sessions per week for five weeks. Floral Design 1, Floral Design 2, and Floral Design Christmas are offered from September to December. Special Occasion, Sympathy and Church, and Weddings are offered between February and June. You will need to purchase a textbook but all materials costs are included in the module cost. Apply the following classes towards a Floral Design certificate or take them as stand-alone classes.

Floral Design Basics 1
Develop a fundamental knowledge of flower arranging and get to know common plant names. Learn about floral tools and supplies, the care and handling of flowers, preparation and planning, and plant identification and design. Bring scissors, wire cutters, and a paring knife to the first class to make your own arrangements to take home. Flowers and supplies are included in the fee. Purchase the following required textbook from the UFV Bookstore:

Floral Design Basics 2
Prerequisite: Floral Design Basics I
Acquire the skills needed to work independently on basic flower arrangements. Learn about sales, pricing, plant identification, and advanced design work. Make your own floral arrangements to take home. Flowers and supplies are included in the course fee. Purchase the following required textbook from the UFV Bookstore:

Floral Design Christmas
Try your hand at a variety of Christmas designs. Learn about Christmas-related product information, cone identification, decorating a Christmas tree, and seasonal designs (table centrepiece with candles, Christmas wreaths, door hangings, and one-sided arrangements). Find out about fertilizers and pesticides for houseplants. Flowers and supplies are included in the course fee.
